Rates & Fees

High reward rate? Check. Flexible bonus categories? Check. No annual fee? Check. It’s pretty easy to see what makes the U.S. Bank Cash Plus card desirable. You can tailor it to your spending habits far more than most credit cards, at little cost to yourself.

In addition to the flexibility, you can use it to pay down a balance from another credit card at no cost thanks to its introductory balance transfer offer. The only area the card really lacks in is its benefits, but even then you’d get some value from the Visa Signature perks.

Insider Advice: Getting the Most Out of Your Card

  • Don’t forget to enroll: Each quarter you’ll need to enroll in the bonus categories you’d like to earn 5% and 2% cash back in.
  • Know when to pick your reward categories: You can choose your categories 45 days prior to the start of the next quarter, until five days before its end. You’ll begin earning 5% and 2% cash back three business days after you choose your categories. If you don’t pick any categories, you’ll only earn 1% cash back for your purchases; there are no retroactive rewards if you activate after making purchases that would have been eligible.
  • Set up automatic alerts: You can elect to have U.S. Bank let you know when it’s time to enroll in the next quarter’s categories. Just log in to your account and navigate to the “Reminders” tab to choose how you’d like to be notified.
  • Choose the categories that are best for you: Uniquely, you can tailor your card’s rewards to fit your spending. Into fitness? Choose the gym category. Is building PCs your thing? Opt for the electronic store category.
  • Get rewarded for paying your utilities: You could earn 5% cash back for your monthly power or water bill with this card if you choose utilities — a rare bonus category to find, but a common expense. Internet/cable/telecom providers don’t count as utilities for this category, but services like that are included in other 5% categories you can choose.
  • Use your card “everyday”: Don’t forget about the 2% cash back categories either. You’ll earn rewards for everyday purchases like gas, groceries, or dining.
  • Take advantage of the 0% balance transfer offer: If you have a balance on another card that’s accruing interest, you can transfer it to this card to get a 0% rate for a set amount of time. However, keep in mind you’d then be responsible to pay down the transferred balance plus any new purchases, and those purchases will have an APR above 0%.

The Rewards

Earning

Spending Rewards
  • 5% cash back on your choice of two bonus categories (up to $2,000 in combined net purchases per quarter)
  • 2% cash back on your choice of one everyday category:
    • Gas
    • Groceries
    • Restaurants
  • 1% cash back on everything else
Introductory Bonus
  • $200 cash bonus for spending $1,000 in the first 120 days after account opening

Keep in mind you’ll need to activate the 5% and 2% bonus categories you want every quarter. If you don’t, you’ll only earn 1% cash back for your purchases.

You can choose your categories 45 days before the next quarter begins, up to five days before it ends. If you do forget and activate your bonus categories late, the rewards will not be retroactively applied.

There are some rewards credit cards with rotating categories that do apply your rewards retroactively if you forget to activate them in time, like the Chase Freedom Flex℠ (Review) and the Discover it® Cash Back (Review).

You’ll only earn 5% cash back on your first $2,000 spent each quarter, but that still equates to at least $100 in rewards every three months. And there’s no limit on the 2% and 1% cash back you can earn, so your rewards will likely be higher than that.

Redeeming

Once you’ve put your card away for the day, take a look at how much cash back you can redeem, and how you can get it. With U.S. Bank it’s a pretty straightforward process. You can:

  • Deposit your cash rewards into a U.S. Bank checking, savings, or money market account
  • Receive a statement credit
  • Enroll in Real-Time Rewards to redeem instantly
  • Receive a U.S. Bank Rewards Visa prepaid card loaded with your cash back

The easiest routes to take are likely going to be either depositing your rewards into a U.S. Bank account or redeeming for statement credits.

The U.S. Bank Rewards Visa Card requires a $25 minimum redemption, with $5 increments. While it’s rare to see a prepaid debit card as a redemption option, it’ll be most convenient for you to opt for the statement credits or bank account deposit.

The Benefits

The U.S. Bank Cash+ Card is issued as a Visa Signature, so cardmembers will likely get a few Visa Signature protections. However, U.S. Bank doesn’t list every perk that comes with it, so take a look at your Guide to Benefits to learn what your card can do.

The Bottom Line

The U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® Card is very rewarding with few drawbacks. You can tailor your reward experience to your spending habits to maximize the return on your spending, a nice change from other cards where you just get what you get.

The benefits are really the only area where this card is lacking, and even then they aren’t that bad. You may easily find some value from them. Coupled with the rewards, this card wouldn’t be a bad addition to your wallet.

You could even pair the U.S. Bank Cash+ with another card that earns a flat rate for everything you buy. Use the U.S. Bank Cash+ Card for all of its bonus categories, and the flat-rate card for everything else. Take a look at some of the best cash back credit cards to find one for you.

How Do I Apply for the U.S. Bank Cash+ Card?

Follow the link below to apply now. You’ll be directed to the credit card issuer’s website where you can securely apply.

You should usually hear back instantly if you’ve been approved or denied, but in some cases U.S. Bank may request additional information.

What Credit Scores Do I Need to Qualify for the U.S. Bank Cash+ Card?

You should have good credit for the best chance of approval for the U.S. Bank Cash+ card.

To qualify for good credit, your FICO score would need to be at least 670 and your VantageScore would need to be at least 700.

However, approval relies on more than just credit scores. With additional information like your income and monthly rent or mortgage payment, you could still be approved even if your scores aren’t at the recommended level. But that also means even if your scores are high enough, there’s a chance you could still be denied.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the U.S. Bank Cash+ card’s 5% cash back categories?

There’s a good selection to choose from, including streaming services, gyms, department stores, fast food restaurants, and utilities. But keep in mind these categories are subject to change, and internet/cable/telecom providers don’t count as utilities for that category.

Take a look at all of the bonus categories you can choose from.

What benefits come with the U.S. Bank Cash+ card?

The benefits are pretty good for a card with no annual fee. You can monitor one of your credit scores, use Visa Signature Concierge for help with non-emergency tasks, and get special treatment at a number of hotels through the Luxury Hotel Collection, among other things.

And your card may come with more Visa Signature benefits that the credit card issuer doesn’t list, so check your Guide to Benefits.

Why We Picked It

The Chase Freedom Flex℠ (Review) covers a lot of ground with its bonus categories.

In addition to rotating 5% categories, the Freedom Flex offers 5% and 3% static reward categories, so it covers more than the Cash+. However, you can’t pick your own categories, and the quarterly spending limit on the rotating categories is $1,500, which is $500 less than the U.S. Bank card’s limit.

The quarterly categories Chase offers usually include some of the U.S. Bank card’s options, but take a look and compare which bonus categories you’re more likely to spend money in. You could easily end up earning more with the Freedom Flex depending on how much you spend in its static categories, too.

Instead of Visa Signature benefits, this card comes equipped with perks from Chase and World Elite Mastercard, which are quite good for a card at this level.

Why We Picked It

The Discover it® Cash Back (Review) is another card with rotating reward categories that you’ll need to activate.

For the first year you have the card, Discover will double all the rewards you earn (in rotating categories and elsewhere). It’s a little less versatile than the U.S. Bank card because you can’t pick your own categories, and it has a lower quarterly limit so you won’t be able to earn as much. However, if you’re more likely to spend within Discover’s categories, perhaps it would be the better choice.

The Discover it Cash Back features an intro offer for both purchases and balance transfers, but the benefits aren’t as impressive as what the U.S. Bank Cash+ card provides.

Why We Picked It

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express (Review) is one of the most rewarding cards when it comes to groceries, streaming, and gas.

There aren’t any changing bonus categories to keep track of here, nor will you have to activate your rewards quarterly. Instead, you’ll earn a very high rate for U.S. supermarkets and select streaming services, plus a great rate at U.S. gas stations (see terms in the Rewards tab). But that means you lose out on the versatility of the U.S. Bank Cash+.

There is an annual fee, but with the rewards you’ll likely be earning, you should hardly notice it (something I can personally attest to). The benefits are pretty strong too; you’d likely find more casual use for them than what the U.S. Bank card offers.

  • There is a balance transfer fee of either $5 or 3% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater.

Why We Picked It

The Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer (Review) is a good flat-rate rewards card with a long introductory balance transfer offer.

Whereas the Cash+ offers many different bonus categories to choose from, the Double Cash simply offers one reward rate for every purchase. You’ll earn 1% cash back when you first make the purchase, and the other 1% cash back when you pay it off. It’s a little simpler than the U.S. Bank card, and can still be pretty rewarding.

It’s not a Visa Signature card, however, so you’ll lose the benefits that come with the U.S. Bank card. But you don’t have to choose between the two — you could use them together. Use the U.S. Bank Cash+ for its 5% bonus categories, and maybe the 2% categories, and the Double Cash for everything else.
