The US Airways® Premier World MasterCard® is a good travel rewards card if you frequently use US Airways. Cardholders need to pay an annual fee of $89, but there is a long 0% introductory APR period for balance transfers and a number of rewards and traveling benefits to make up for it.

This card is one of our top picks for the Best Airline Credit Cards. US Airways recently merged with American Airlines, so you may want to learn what this means for the credit cards and rewards involved.

The Rewards

Cardholders will receive 2 miles for every dollar they spend on US Airways purchases, and 1 mile for every other dollar spent. 50,000 bonus miles are awarded after the first purchase is made and the annual fee is paid.

Miles are redeemable for flights with both US Airways and American Airlines, but when miles are redeemed through US Airways a 5,000 mile discount will be applied. This means that if 20,000 miles are usually required, only 15,000 will be needed.

Miles do not expire as long as there is a balance in the account once every 18 months.

The Benefits

There are quite a few great travel benefits that come with this card, as well as some of the typical shopping benefits.

The cardholder and up to 4 traveling companions will have their first bag checked for free on domestic US Airways flights. You can also check in at the US Airways First Class counter, and get access to priority boarding Zone 2 so you can board more quickly and decrease your waiting time. When you open your account, you’ll receive a complimentary day pass to the US Airways Club, an exclusive airport lounge with refreshments, places to relax, and some light business services.

Cardholders will receive a complimentary companion certificate of $99, which is good for up to 2 guests traveling with you in coach class. Taxes and other fees apply to this as well, and the certificate must be used when leaving from the contiguous US and arriving in the contiguous US or Canada.

A number of additional benefits that typically come with a Premier MasterCard are provided as well. These include a personal concierge service, to help with dining and travel reservations as well as finding entertainment and local venues, an especially useful service while traveling.

Cardholders have access to MasterCard® Travel Services, which provides complimentary amenities and special luxuries at premier hotels and resorts around the world. Trip cancellation/interruption insurance is provided, which might cover some or all of the costs of your fare if your trip is cut short or disrupted. A similar benefit, baggage delay insurance, will reimburse you up to $100 per day for 3 days if your baggage is delayed more than 12 hours. You’ll also get an auto rental collision damage waiver, covering your auto rental against theft and damage, as long as you decline the car company’s insurance.

When shopping, an extended warranty is available for many products, which will double the original warranty, up to an extension of 1 year.

The Costs

There is an annual fee of $89 for this card.

The APR for purchases is 15.99%, 19.99%, or 24.99% (Variable), depending on your credit report. There is a 0% introductory APR period for balance transfers that lasts 15 months, and then the APR range is the same as for purchases. The introductory rate only applies to balance transfers made within the first 45 days after account opening. Cash advances have an APR of 25.24% (Variable).

Balance transfers also have a fee of 3% of the transfer or $10, whichever is greater. Cash advances cost 5% of the advance or $10, and foreign transactions cost 3% of the transaction.

If a late payment is made, a penalty APR of up to 27.24% (Variable) might be applied, which could last indefinitely. Late and returned payments also cost up to $35 each.

There is no fee for going over the credit limit.

The Bottom Line

If you travel enough and can handle the annual fee of the the US Airways Premier World MasterCard you’ll most likely end up getting a lot out of the miles and extra benefits of the card. If this annual fee seems steep to you, remember that you’re getting many discounts and complimentary services when you use the card, and this is what the annual fee is paying for. If you travel frequently, the $89 will probably seem like a great deal overall.

Watch out for the high interest rates on this card, but if you pay off your balance frequently you won’t need to worry about them. The introductory offer for balance transfers is great, giving you time to pay at no interest if you’re looking to transfer a higher-interest account balance to this one.
