Shell offers 2 different credit cards for consumers: the Shell Drive for Five Card and the Shell Platinum Select® MasterCard®. The first can only be used at Shell, while the second can be used anywhere MasterCard is accepted. Each card will help you save money at the pump, though you’ll need to reach a minimum spending limit each month. There are no annual fees but the APR is quite high, so be sure to pay off your balance each month to avoid incurring interest.

The Rewards

Shell Drive for Five Card

The Drive for Five Card will save you 5¢ per gallon each month as long as you buy at least 45 gallons of gas that month. This only applies to Shell Nitrogen Enriched gasolines and Shell Diesel fuel, and up to 100 gallons each month.

Be aware that if you don’t purchase at least 45 gallons of gas in a month, you will receive no discount.

Shell Platinum Select MasterCard

With the Platinum MasterCard, every purchase you make will get you closer to better discounts on gas. For each billing cycle, the rewards structure is:

  • $500 – $999.99 = $0.10 discount per gallon
  • $1,000 – $2,499.99 = $0.15 discount per gallon
  • $2,500.00 an up = $0.20 discount per gallon

This discount will be calculated at the end of a billing cycle, and the discount will be credited for purchases during the following billing cycle.

You’ll need to spend at least $500 per month with this card to receive the discount next month, and the discount will only apply to the first 100 gallons purchased.

The Benefits

Shell Drive for Five Card

Cardholders won’t be held liable for fraudulent charges, and are covered by Citi® Identity Theft Solutions if their personal information is compromised.

Shell Platinum Select MasterCard

As a Platinum Select MasterCard, this card comes with a number of additional travel benefits.

Cardholders can speak with a concierge service for personal assistant tasks like finding and scheduling trips and accommodations, or finding hard-to-find gifts.

When traveling, MasterCard Global ServiceTM is available for emergency assistance for your card, like reporting and replacing a lost card, while the MasterAssistTM Plus will provide information and assistance in personal emergencies like car accidents.

Two types of insurance are provided: MasterTravelTM provides coverage against accidental death and dismemberment when traveling by common carrier, and MasterRentalTM provides insurance against theft and damage to rented cars, as long as the car rental company’s own insurance is declined.

The Bottom Line

If you live or frequently travel near Shell gas stations and are interested in paying less for gas, these cards could help you do so. Take careful note of the spending thresholds for each card so you can time your fill-ups to maximize savings.

If you’d like to use the card for more than just gas, the Platinum Select MasterCard will be your choice. With enough spending, this card will also end up providing a bigger discount per gallon.

You’ll also want to pay off your balance in full each month, or at least pay it down as much as possible, to avoid the high APR that each card has. Monthly interest rates can quickly eat into the savings you were enjoying on gas.

There are no annual fees with these cards, so if you spend carefully and monitor your balance you can come out ahead.
