The BankAmericard Travel Rewards Credit Card is a basic travel card you can use to make purchases anywhere.

You’ll earn 3 points per dollar when booking through Bank of America’s Travel Center, and 1.5 points everywhere else. There’s also a pretty nice bonus point offer that shouldn’t be hard to get.

This card is designed for people who don’t travel very often, with no annual fee to worry about if you don’t use it as much as you thought you would. It’s very cheap and easy to use, making it a good choice for casual travelers.

The Rewards

  • 3 points per dollar on purchases from the Bank of America Travel Center
  • 1.5 points per dollar on all other purchases
  • 20,000 bonus points for spending $1,000 in the first 90 days (online applicants only)
  • 10% point bonus for Bank of America customers (with checking or savings accounts)

The rewards for this card are pretty simple. You’ll get the same amount of points almost anywhere you shop, so you won’t need to worry about any reward categories.

And if you’re a Bank of America account holder, that 10% bonus will add up to quite a lot over time.

The 20,000 bonus point offer comes to a $200 value, so you could use this to help pay for the first trip you take with it. If you can book your travel through Bank of America’s Travel Center you’ll earn the most points, letting you get even more bang for your buck.

You’ll get the most value from your points by redeeming them to pay for past travel expenses, where you’ll get 1 cent for every point you redeem. Only travel purchases made within the last 12 months are eligible.

You can also redeem your points for a check or a deposit into a Bank of America account, but you’ll be losing out if you do. When you redeem this way you’ll only get .006 cents for every point. This means 20,000 points would come to $120, instead of the $200 you’d get when you redeem for travel expenses.

The Costs & Fees

Annual Fee Intro Purchase APR Regular Purchase and Balance Transfer APR Cash Advance APR Foreign Transaction Fee
$0 0% for 12 months 16.99%-24.99% Variable 19.99%–26.99% Variable None
Penalty APR Late Fee Returned Payment Fee
Up to 29.99% Variable Up to $38 Up to $27

This is a pretty basic card that should be very cheap to use.

Since there’s no annual fee to worry about, this card can be completely free if you avoid paying interest.  Just pay off your balance in full by the end of the billing period and you’ll never have to worry about interest accruing from month to month.

There are no foreign transaction fees with this card, which means you can use it outside the country without paying an extra charge, like with some cards. This is exactly what you want from a travel credit card.

The Bottom Line: 4 out of 5 Stars

The BankAmericard Travel Rewards Credit Card is a pretty basic general travel rewards card, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a good card for you.

Some cards offer points or miles in certain categories, or for particular airlines or hotel chains, but this card provides the same 1.5-point reward almost everywhere you shop. That lets you use the card whenever you want, or whenever you’re not using a reward card for a specific category.

Insider Tip: You’ll get the most value from this card if you use it to pay for your travel through the Bank of America Travel Center, where you’ll get 3 points per dollar. Be sure to redeem your points for travel expenses (1 cent per point) rather than checks or deposits (.006 cents per point).

This is a very inexpensive card, with no annual fee to worry about. This makes it a good choice for travelers who may not do a lot of traveling, or who don’t know how much traveling to expect in a given year. You won’t need to worry about paying for a card that you’re not using.

And if you avoid interest by paying off your balance in full every billing period, this card should be all profit. Don’t forget to check your Guide to Benefits to learn what else you can use your card for.

We gave the BankAmericard Travel Rewards Credit Card 4 out of 5 Stars because it’s simple and straightforward. Even though there aren’t a lot of bells and whistles on this card and it’s not as rewarding as some, the lack of an annual fee means this card shouldn’t cost you a dime. It’s not meant for very frequent travelers, but it is good for people who might take a few trips per year. Just use the Travel Center and redeem your points for travel expenses and this card will be a free little money-maker in your pocket.
