Costco offers two valuable reward credit cards for its loyal customers: the Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi and the Costco Anywhere Visa Business Card by Citi.

The first is for personal use, while the second is meant to be a credit line for small business owners. The costs and fees of these cards are the same, and they both offer the same great rewards, but some of the extra benefits are different.

You’ll need a Costco membership to apply for these cards, so if you’re already a Costco member it could really pay to take a look – either for your own spending or to help fund your business.

Keep reading to learn more about them, and how they can help you save money at Costco and on a variety of other purchases.

Where Can I Use The Costco Credit Cards?

You can use both of these cards anywhere Visa is accepted, which is pretty much everywhere. Purchases made outside the U.S. will incur a foreign transaction fee of 3%, except for purchases at any Costco worldwide.

The Rewards

These cards come with the exact same rewards. You’ll get:

  • 4% cash back on eligible gas worldwide, including gas at Costco; up to $7,000 per year, then 1% back
  • 3% cash back at restaurants and on eligible travel purchases
  • 2% cash back on all other purchases from Costco and
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases

These rewards are quite good compared to most credit cards, especially if you’re a business owner who travels frequently.

But take note that the redemption process is a bit different than usual. Instead of simply using the rewards as a statement credit to reduce your balance, for example, you’ll receive a coupon in the mail each year in your February billing statement.

You’ll need to take the coupon to a Costco, where you can use it for purchases or redeem the balance in the form of cash or a check. So you can use it like a Costco gift card or just trade it for cash. This is a bit more of a hassle than most credit cards, but you can get the money eventually.

The Benefits

The benefits for these cards, provided by Citi, are actually a bit different: the business card has fewer.

The following benefits are for the regular Anywhere Visa consumer card; the Anywhere Business Visa card has all of these features EXCEPT the Price Rewind and Trip Cancellation & Interruption Protection. This is unfortunate, because those are two benefits that might come in useful more often than the others.

  • Zero-Liability Fraud Protection

You won’t be held responsible for unauthorized purchases (contact customer service immediately).

  • Citi Price Rewind

Automatically searches to find the lowest price on registered items. If the same item is found at a lower price within 60 days, you may be reimbursed the difference.

  • Purchase Protection

Provides coverage against damage and theft for eligible purchases, for 120 days (90 days for NY residents).

  • Extended Warranty

Extends the manufacturer’s warranty on eligible purchases.

  • Travel & Emergency Assistance

Provides 24/7 help before and during trips, including emergency travel arrangements, medical and legal referrals, and more.

  • Worldwide Travel Accident Insurance

Provides coverage for you and your family if a tragic accident were to occur while traveling.

  • Trip Cancellation & Interruption Protection

You can be reimbursed if your trip is cancelled or interrupted for an eligible reason.

  • Worldwide Car Rental Insurance

Your rental cars are covered against theft and damage, as long as you decline the rental company’s own insurance.

The Costs & Fees

Card Annual Fee Intro APR for Purchases Regular Purchase APR Balance Transfer APR Cash Advance APR Foreign Transaction Fee
Costco Anywhere Visa None (Costco membership required) 0% for 7 months 15.49% *Variable 15.49% *Variable 25.49% *Variable 3% (none at Costco worldwide)
Costco Anywhere Visa Business None (Costco membership required) 0% for 7 months 15.49% *Variable N/A 22.24% *Variable 3% (none at Costco worldwide)
Card Penalty APR Late Fee Returned Payment Fee
Costco Anywhere Visa Up to 29.99% *Variable Up to $37 Up to $37
Costco Anywhere Visa Business Up to 29.99% *Variable Up to $37 Up to $37

The Verdict

There’s only one significant difference to note here: the regular consumer card allows balance transfers, while the Business card does not.

These cards have no annual fees, but you’ll need to pay for a Costco membership. This is $55 at the minimum level, for regular consumers and businesses, and $110 for the Executive Membership, which comes with some additional features.

If you consider the Costco membership to be the annual fee for these cards, the minimum membership level is a fairly low fee for rewards like these.

The Bottom Line: 5 Out Of 5 Stars

If you’re already paying for a Costco membership, the Costco Anywhere Visa and Costco Anywhere Visa Business should be able to save you quite a bit of money over time, whether you need a card for personal or business use (as long as you’re using them responsibly).

There’s no extra fee to use them, so just avoid paying interest and these cards can actually negate the annual Costco membership fee. How much would you need to spend per year to do that?

Let’s say you spend:

  • $1,000 on gas @ 4% cash back = $40
  • $600 at restaurants and on travel @ 3% cash back = $18
  • $800 at Costco @ 2% cash back = $16

For a total of $74 cash back per year, almost $20 more than the minimum membership cost of $55. Those could be some very modest numbers, based on your own spending habits, and it doesn’t even include any extra spending you might do at the 1% level, so you might expect to earn much more than that.

If you spend a bit more than that you could even pay for the more expensive Executive Membership at $110, but this wouldn’t necessarily be a good idea. The main benefits of the Executive Membership are some extra services and 2% back at Costco, but these credit cards come with that same 2% back, similar extra benefits and services, plus more. So you can get many of those higher-tier membership benefits from the credit card, while only paying for the regular membership.

We gave these cards 5 out of 5 Stars because they are very good when it comes to store cards, and they’re actually quite good even compared to the broader selection of general reward cards. The cash back categories have the potential to earn you quite a bit back, especially if you spend a ton of money on gas. You’ll get an introductory 0% APR on purchases, which is a rare find on store cards, and after that the interest rate is much lower than most store cards. The business card doesn’t permit balance transfers, but that’s not a big concern because the main purpose of these cards is to earn some cash back on your spending.
