Our Rating: 4 Out of 5 Stars

We give the Navy Federal More Rewards American Express® Card 4 out of 5 Stars. It’s pretty rewarding with very few fees to worry about.

Why We Like It

  • No annual fee
  • No foreign transaction fee
  • No balance transfer fee
  • 3X points per dollar for everyday purchases (supermarkets, restaurants, gas, and transit)
  • Introductory interest rate for purchases: 0% for 9 months, then 9.65% - 18.00% Variable

Why It Could Be Better

  • Few benefits
  • Only available to those who have participated in the military or certain affiliated organizations, and their families. Learn about NFCU eligibility here.

If you’re already an NFCU member, the Navy Federal More Rewards Amex Card wouldn’t be a bad choice. You won’t have to worry about an annual fee or a foreign transaction fee, which could be ideal if you or a family member are stationed overseas.

Cards bogged down with a plethora of fees can be a hindrance, so it’s nice to see a rewarding and inexpensive option like this. And thanks to the card’s bonus categories, it’s also nice to earn a small return on money you’re likely already spending.

Insider Advice: Getting the Most Out of Your Card

  • Fill up the tank on your way to dinner or to the grocery store: The NFCU More Rewards earns 3X points per dollar for gas, groceries, and dining, so don’t leave home without it. You’ll also earn on transit (not including rideshares like Uber or Lyft), so even if you’re not driving you’ll have a chance to earn some bonus points.
  • Take it with you when you travel: With no foreign transaction fee, you can spend overseas without stressing about another charge.
  • Use your card for car rentals: Not only does the card provide rental car insurance, but you could get up to 25% off your rental from major rental car dealers. Call 1-877-754-9670 for competitive rates and deals.
  • Fly Delta: You can get up to 10% off Delta flights when you pay for Delta tickets through Amex Travel.
  • Keep an eye on Amex Offers: American Express provides extra rewards with a selection of different merchants. It changes from time to time so be sure to check it every now and then. Offers are limited; enrollment required.
  • Shop with confidence: Your new purchases, whether they be from Amazon or your local Target, will likely be covered by extended warranty protection, return protection, and purchase protection.

Insider tip

In order to use a credit card’s grace period to avoid paying interest charges on your purchases, make sure to pay off your statement balance in full every month.

The Bottom Line

The Navy Federal More Rewards American Express® Card is an all-around solid choice for a rewards credit card. But keep in mind it’s only available for NFCU members.

It seems particularly useful to active duty military members stationed overseas and to their families. There’s no foreign transaction fee, and you could save yourself some money on Delta airfare as well as rental cars when you land.

However, it would be plenty useful at home too. Earning rewards for purchases you make on a regular basis (like gas and groceries) is just money back in your pocket, especially considering there’s no annual fee. Plus, the card’s shopping protections could save you money given the right circumstances, and help you avoid some potential headaches.

How Do I Apply for the Navy Federal More Rewards American Express Card?

Follow the link below to apply now. You’ll need to become a Navy Federal Credit Union member first, which requires having “ties to the armed forces, DoD [Department of Defense] or National Guard.”

What Credit Scores Do I Need to Qualify for the Navy Federal More Rewards American Express Card?

The More Rewards Amex asks for good credit to qualify. Good credit for FICO credit scores is at least 670, while for VantageScore it’s at least 700.

That said, approval from credit card issuers is dependent on more than just credit scores. Issuers will look at things like income and monthly rent or mortgage payments when considering creditworthiness.

That means even if your credit scores aren’t quite where they should be, you could still be approved. But that also means there’s a chance for you to be denied even if your scores are high enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why We Picked It

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (Review) is a popular general travel card with strong point transfer opportunities.

The Sapphire Preferred has a lot going for it, but two of its best features include its 1:1 transfer rate to Chase’s travel partners and its 25% point bonus when you redeem for travel through Chase Ultimate Rewards. By taking advantage of point transfers, you could find an increased value for your points. If you find a per-point value of 2 cents or more, you’d increase the card’s cash back equivalent to up to 4% or more for certain purchases.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred’s benefits are pretty impressive for a card at its fee level. They include a slew of travel protections including the coveted primary rental car insurance, as well as a DoorDash membership, the Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection, and the Visa Signature Concierge, which could all be plenty useful.

Why We Picked It

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express (Review) is one of the most rewarding cards when it comes to U.S. supermarkets and select U.S. streaming services.

It earns an impressive 6% cash back on those purchases (up to $6,000 spent annually at U.S. supermarkets, then 1%), in addition to a strong 3% cash back at U.S. gas stations. Unlike the Navy Federal card, it does carry an annual fee. However, the rewards will likely make it hard to notice.

The benefits are pretty comparable, though the Blue Cash Preferred doesn’t offer any discounts for flights or car rentals. But you will get complimentary ShopRunner membership to speed up your deliveries from some merchants.

Spending Rewards
  • 6% cash back:
    • U.S. supermarkets (up to $6,000 spent annually, then 1%)

  • Balance Transfer Offer: 0% intro APR on Balance Transfers for 18 months. After that, the variable APR will be 13.99% – 23.99%, based on your creditworthiness.
  • Balance Transfers do not earn cash back.

  • There is a balance transfer fee of either $5 or 3% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater.
  • The standard variable APR for Citi Flex Plan is 13.99% – 23.99% based on your creditworthiness. Citi Flex Plan offers are made available at Citi’s discretion.
Why We Picked It

The Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer (Review) is a straightforward, flat-rate rewards card.

The rewards are a bit staggered here. You’ll earn 1% cash back when you purchase something, then the other 1% when you pay it off (must pay at least the minimum due on time to earn rewards). And that’s pretty much it. The benefits don’t offer much, so the Navy Federal card comes out on top in that department.

However, because the Double Cash doesn’t have an annual fee, you could use it together with the Navy Federal card without adding another expense to your life. Use the Navy Federal card where it earns the most rewards, and use the Double Cash for everything else.

Spending Rewards
  • 2% cash back for every purchase (must pay at least the minimum due on time):
    • 1% back when you make a purchase
    • 1% back when you pay for that purchase

Why We Picked It

The PenFed Platinum Rewards Visa Signature® Card (Review), much like the NFCU card, is a solid general rewards card that earns on everyday spending.

It earns a pretty impressive rate for both gas and groceries, especially for a credit card with no annual fee. But similar to how the Navy Federal card is only available to NFCU members, you’ll need to be a PenFed member to qualify for this card.

There are a few limitations when it comes time to redeem rewards. There’s no option to redeem for statement credits. Instead, you have to redeem for travel, gift cards, or merchandise. Points are usually worth less than 1 cent, unless you’re redeeming for travel, but even then the value isn’t guaranteed. So that likely means PenFed points will often be worth less than NFCU points. And, your points will expire in five years. Something else to keep in mind.

It is a Visa Signature so it’ll come with a handful of Visa Signature benefits, but the discounts and special offers seem less practical than what the Navy Federal card offers.

Spending Rewards
  • 5X points per dollar on Gas purchases at the pump
  • 3X points per dollar on Groceries
  • 1X point per dollar on all other purchases
Introductory Bonus
  • $100 statement credit after spending $1,500 in the first 90 days
Key Features
  • Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection: Enjoy a variety of perks, like automatic room upgrades, complimentary in-room WiFi, and more, at more than 900 hotels around the world.
  • Visa Signature Concierge: Call for non-emergency help whenever you need it, like assistance making dining or travel reservations.
  • Free FICO credit score: Check your FICO NextGen credit score for free whenever you’d like, based on your Equifax credit report.
  • Shopping and travel protections: Purchase Security, Roadside Dispatch, Travel Accident Insurance, Travel and Emergency Assistance Services
  • Balance transfer APR: 0% for 12 months, then 11.74% to 17.99% Variable
  • Balance transfer fee: 3% per transaction
  • No foreign transaction fee
