If you just bought all new office furniture or a copier for your business without using a rewards credit card, you left money on the table. A good rewards credit card will let you earn cash back on your business purchases, helping you stretch your budget further.

If you’re a small business owner looking for a credit card and you don’t want to worry about justifying an annual fee, the Discover it Business Card might be for you.

Offering 1.5% cash back on all purchases, Discover will also match your cash back for your first year. That means you’ll earn the equivalent of 3% cash back in your first year of using the card.

There isn’t much else to this card; just a solid flat-rate rewards program that provides the same amount of cash back for every purchase.

With no annual fee, it’s a good option for business owners who need access to a line of credit for their business operations.

Our Rating

We give the Discover it Business Card 4 out of 5 Stars. It’s a solid business card that allows you to earn cash back on all purchases. However, its anemic benefits do reduce the card’s value.

Why We Like It

  • 1.5% cash back on all purchases
  • Cashback Match for the first year
  • Cash back never expires
  • Ability to sync to Quicken, QuickBooks, and Excel
  • No annual fee
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Excellent customer service

Why It Could Be Better

  • Cashback Match is limited to your first year
  • Lackluster benefits
  • No travel perks

The Discover it Business Card is a good option for business owners looking for a rewards credit card to earn cash back on all purchases. However, if you’re looking for a card that offers more benefits, check out some alternatives below.

Insider Advice: Using This Card As Part of Your Credit Card Strategy

  • Compare with other business credit cards: If your work requires you to travel often, another business credit card will likely offer more rewards and perks than the Discover it Business Card.
  • Use for general expenses: By using your card for general business expenses, you can earn 1.5% cash back on every purchase and simplify your bookkeeping.
  • Enjoy the Cashback Match: Use your card during your first year, and Discover will match all of the cash back you earn. That gives you a cash back value of 3% for the first year.
  • Redeem your rewards for gift cards: Redeem your rewards for gift cards to get the best deal, allowing you to get an extra $5, $10, or even $20 in value.
  • Use the card when traveling internationally: With no foreign transaction fees, the Discover it Business Card is a decent option when traveling to another country. However, Discover isn’t accepted widely outside the U.S., so carrying a Visa or Mastercard business credit card as well is a smart decision.

The Rewards

Earning

Spending Rewards
  • 1.5% cash back on all purchases
Introductory Bonus Offer
  • Cashback Match: New cardmembers get double the cash back earned in the first year

With this card, you can earn unlimited cash back on all purchases.

You’ll earn 1.5% cash back on every purchase. But, in your first year, Discover will match your cash back. You’ll get those extra rewards at the end of the first year.

That means you’ll earn a 3% cash back equivalent on every purchase. That’s an excellent reward for a card with no annual fee. It’s a better flat rate than you’ll find with almost any other credit card, but after the first year it drops to a more typical 1.5%.

It’s a good idea to compare this card to alternative business cards before applying. You could earn more points or higher cash back in select categories. Or, to compare with another flat-rate rewards card, the Capital One Spark Cash for Business may offer more overall value depending on your level of spending. The Spark card provides 2% cash back on all purchases, but it also has a $95 annual fee.

Redeeming

Redeeming your cash back rewards is very simple with Discover. You can redeem it in several different ways, including:

  • Statement credits
  • Bank account deposits
  • Charitable donations
  • Gift cards

Statement credits are quickest and easiest way to get your rewards, and they don’t lock you into a single merchant like a gift card. However, you’ll sacrifice some value by opting for a statement credit.

We recommend sticking with gift cards as your redemption method whenever possible. By going this route you get more value for your money. Discover will add at least $5 to every gift card redemption, sometimes more. For example, you can get a $100 gift card to Hotels.com for just $80 worth of cash back rewards, a 25% increase in value.

The downsides to redeeming for gift cards are that physical gift cards can take some time to arrive at your place of business, and you’re limited to shopping with the co-branded merchant. However, there are also electronic gift card options which you can get immediately, and there are hundreds of these to choose from.

The Benefits

Most of the Discover it Business Card’s value comes from its rewards, rather than its benefits. However, it does have some useful perks business owners will find useful, such as the ability to sync your account to Quicken, QuickBooks, or Excel.

Reports to Business Credit Bureaus

Discover will report your normal card activity to three business credit bureaus: Equifax Business, Experian Business, and Dun & Bradstreet. Both positive and negative account activity will be reported to the regular consumer credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

This is a bit of an unusual situation for business cards, which usually report positive activity to some business bureaus while only reporting negative activity to the consumer bureaus. But Discover will report all activity to the consumer bureaus. That means you can use this card to help improve your business credit and your personal credit, while any issues like late payments will end up hurting your business and personal credit.

Different issuers will report business card activity in different ways, and there’s quite a bit of variability here. Chase business cards, for example, will report to the business bureaus mentioned above, plus Small Business Financial Exchange. Amex business cards report to Dun & Bradstreet and Small Business Financial Exchange. And Capital One business cards are more like Discover cards, reporting positive activity to Experian Business, Dun & Bradstreet, Small Business Financial Exchange, and the regular consumer bureaus.

Free FICO Credit Scorecard

With the Discover it Business Card, you’ll be able to check your personal FICO Score 8 for free, and get alerts if it increases or decreases. Discover will provide a FICO Score 8 from your personal TransUnion credit report, and will also break down your score and offer tips for improving it.

Being able to check one of your credit scores for free is a common benefit for credit cards now. However, it’s still a useful perk if you don’t have another way to check your personal FICO Score 8 from TransUnion.

Expense Tracking

As a business owner, accurate expense tracking is essential. The Discover it Business Card helps streamline your bookkeeping by connecting with tracking software like Quicken, QuickBooks, and Excel. You can quickly and easily download your transactions, making it easier to identify deductions for your taxes.

Cash at Checkout

There are times when you need to take out cash for your business operations, such as when traveling. Instead of going to an ATM or bank and withdrawing money from your bank account, the Discover Cash at Checkout program allows you to get the money you need without paying ATM or cash advance fees.

Just use your Discover card at an eligible retailer, such as Dollar General, Sam’s Club, and Walmart. At the register, choose how much cash you’d like to have on top of the purchase price of your other items. The extra money is counted as a purchase made with your credit card rather than a cash advance, helping you save money.

Free Employee Cards

As your business grows, you can add employee cards to your account at no cost to you. You can set spending limits on those cards, and you’ll earn rewards for all of your employees’ purchases.

You can add up to five employee cards to your account.

Other Benefits

  • $0 Fraud Liability Guarantee: If your card is lost or stolen, you are not liable for any fraudulent charges made to your account. Contact customer support immediately if you suspect fraud.
  • Fraud Protection: Discover monitors your account around the clock for suspicious or unusual activity.
  • Free Social Security Number Alerts: Discover searches for your Social Security number on thousands of risky sites and will alert you if your information was compromised.

The Terms & Fees

Intro APR for Purchases Purchase APR Balance Transfer APR Cash Advance APR
0% for 12 months 14.74%–22.74% Variable 14.74%–22.74% Variable 26.74% Variable
Annual Fee Foreign Transaction Fee Balance Transfer Fee Cash Advance Fee
$0  None 5% 5%, $10 minimum
Penalty APR Late Fee Returned Payment Fee
None None the first time; Up to $37 after that Up to $37

The fees for the Discover it Business Card are very straightforward. Unlike some business credit cards, the Discover card has no annual fee.

There is an introductory offer for new purchases: you’ll get 0% APR for 12 months after account opening. Once the introductory offer ends, your APR will increase to 14.74%–22.74% Variable.

There is no balance transfer offer, so there’s no big advantage to transferring a balance from a card with a higher interest rate over to this card.

There is no penalty APR, which can sometimes be applied if you make a payment late. There’s no fee for the first late payment, but after that the fee will be up to $37.

There are no foreign transaction fees. However, Discover is not widely accepted internationally, so it makes sense to carry another card when traveling to a different country.

What Is the Credit Limit?

If you apply for the Discover it Business Card and are approved, your credit line will be at least $500. However, you may qualify for a credit increase after a few months of making your payments on time and keeping your account in good standing. We recommend requesting a credit line increase every 6 to 12 months if you want to raise your limit.

The Bottom Line

The Discover it Business Card is a smart option for new business owners who want to earn decent cash back rewards (and who doesn’t?).

With the ability to earn 3% cash back your first year, it’s a great card to use for essential business purchases, like office supplies and equipment. Redeem those rewards for gift cards and you can stretch their value even further.

The value of the card does decline after the first year, as you’ll no longer be eligible for the Cashback Match. However, 1.5% cash back is still a good value for a business credit card with no annual fee.

This makes it a good choice for business owners looking to earn rewards outside of select spending categories, where other cards will be more profitable.

There aren’t many cost-saving or travel benefits, which is probably the biggest downside of this card, but the ability to merge your transactions with QuickBooks, Quicken, or Excel is a convenient feature.

If you’re looking for a card with more rewards or fancy bells and whistles, like bonus categories or airport lounge access, take a look at some other business credit card options below.

How to Apply for the Discover it Business Card

Alternatives to the Discover it Business Card

While the Discover it Business can be a great card for new business owners, there are other options that may be a better fit if you’re looking for more benefits and perks.

We're currently unable to link directly to an application for the Chase Ink Business Cash Credit Card, but you can learn more here, on our advertising partner's website.

If you’re looking for a card that offers higher rewards for routine business expenses, the Chase Ink Business Cash Credit Card (Review) can be a great choice. Offering 5% cash back at a variety of merchants, you can rack up rewards quickly for your regular expenses.

Even though it also has no annual fee, it offers more benefits than the Discover it Card, including auto rental collision damage waivers and shopping protections. For business owners, that could be a major factor in deciding which card to choose.

Rewards

Spending Rewards
  • 5% cash back on the first $25,000 spent each year:
    • At office supply stores
    • On internet, cable, and phone services
  • 2% cash back on the first $25,000 spent each year:
    • At gas stations
    • At restaurants
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases, with no limit
INTRODUCTORY BONUS OFFER
  • $500 bonus cash back for spending $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months after account opening
    • Return on spend: 16.67%

Besides being able to get 5% cash back on office supply purchases, you can also get 2% cash back at gas stations and restaurants. Those are common spending categories for small business owners.

While you can earn 3% cash back with the Discover card, that’s only possible the first year. After that, you’ll earn just 1.5% cash back. It could be a smart strategy to combine these two cards, using the Ink Business Cash in select spending categories and the Discover card for all other purchases.

Plus, the Ink Business Cash provides a $500 signup bonus for spending $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months after account opening. If you’re running a business, you’ll likely spend $3,000 rather quickly, making the bonus easy to earn.

Benefits

The Chase Ink Business Cash card offers more benefits than the Discover it Business Card, including more shopping and travel protections.

  • Free Employee Cards: The Ink Cash card allows you to get up to 70 employee cards and you can set spending limits on them. The Discover card only allows up to five.
  • Reports to Business Credit Bureaus: Chase will report positive account activity to Dun & Bradstreet, Equifax Business, Experian Business, and the Small Business Financial Exchange.
  • Purchase Protection: While the Discover it Business Card does not offer purchase protection, the Ink Business Cash does. Eligible purchases are covered for 120 days against theft or damage.
  • Extended Warranty Protection: Eligible items with warranties of three years or less can have those warranties extended by up to an additional year. That’s especially helpful for small business owners who frequently need to buy expensive equipment for their companies.
  • Travel and Emergency Assistance Services: Call the number on the back of your card for emergency help while traveling, such as medical referrals or prescription drug assistance.
  • Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver: Discover discontinued offering auto rental collision damage waivers, a real loss for business travelers who frequently rent cars. But the Ink Business Cash gives you coverage against theft and damage when you rent an eligible vehicle, as long as you decline the car rental company’s own insurance.

Terms & Fees

The Ink Business Cash has no annual fee. It also offers a 0% APR for 12 months for new purchases and balance transfers. That’s an improvement over the Discover it Business Card, which does not offer an introductory APR on balance transfers.

Once the promotional period for balance transfers and purchases ends, the APR increases to 15.24%–21.24% Variable.

One drawback to the card is that is does have a foreign transaction fee of 3%, making it more expensive to use internationally than the Discover it Business Card.

If you’re looking for more rewards and benefits and are willing to step up to a card with an annual fee, check out the Chase Ink Business Preferred Credit Card (Review).

Not only can you earn more rewards for travel than you can with the Discover it Business Card, but you can also earn 3X points per $1 spent on social media advertising. That reward category is a huge perk for business owners trying to make a name for themselves.

Rewards

Spending Rewards
  • 3X Ultimate Rewards points per dollar on the first $150,000 spent per year in combined purchases on:
    • Travel
    • Shipping
    • Internet, cable, and phone services
    • Advertising purchases made with social media sites and search engines
  • 1X Ultimate Rewards point per dollar spent everywhere else
Introductory Bonus Offer
  • 80,000 Ultimate Rewards points for spending $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months after account opening
    • Value: $800–$1,600 (assuming 1–2 cents per point)
    • Return on spend: 16–32%
Redemption Bonus
  • 25% point bonus when redeeming for travel expenses through Chase Ultimate Rewards.
    Equivalent to:

    • 3.75X points in the bonus categories
    • 1.25X points everywhere else

Points are worth 1.25 cents each when redeemed through Chase Ultimate Rewards. Or, if you opt for point transfers, you could get 2 cents per point or even more.

That means if you earn 3X rewards points and redeem them for a 25% point bonus with Chase Ultimate Rewards, you’d be getting a 3.75% cash back equivalent. Or, if travel is a priority for you and your business, you could get 6% cash back or even more through point transfers. That’s significantly more than the Discover it Business Card, but you’ll be limited to certain bonus categories.

One unique reward that sets this card apart from many business credit cards is the ability to earn 3X points on advertising purchases on social media and search engines. For small business owners who frequently use Google Ads or promote posts on Facebook, you could rack up rewards quickly with this bonus category.

Benefits

The Chase Ink Business Preferred card offers more substantial benefits than the Discover it Business Card, especially when it comes to travel.

  • Referral Bonus Points: Invite other business owners to apply for the card, and get 20,000 bonus points for every one that is approved. You can earn up to 100,000 points a year from referrals.
  • Free Employee Cards: You can free employee cards for up to 70 workers, much more than the five you’ll get with Discover. If you need more than 70, you can request to split your account with a separate credit limit and an additional 70 free employee cards.
  • Reports to Business Credit Bureaus: Chase will report positive account activity to Dun & Bradstreet, Equifax Business, Experian Business, and the Small Business Financial Exchange.
  • Cell Phone Protection: If you pay your monthly cell phone bill with this card, you’ll get coverage against theft, damage, or loss, up to $600 per claim with a $100 deductible. That’s a fairly valuable benefit that many other cards, like the Discover it Business, don’t offer.
  • Shopping Protections: With this card, you’ll get Purchase Protection and Extended Warranty Protection.
  • Travel Protections: You’ll be able to access Travel and Emergency Assistance Services, Trip Cancellation/Trip Interruption Insurance, and an Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver, benefits the Discover it Business Card doesn’t have.

Terms & Fees

The card has an annual fee of $95. That’s a relatively low fee considering how many more benefits it offers as compared to the Discover Business it Card.

It also has no foreign transaction fees, making it a good card to have in your wallet when traveling internationally. Because it is a Visa, it’s a better choice for traveling outside of the country than the Discover it card.

We're currently unable to link directly to an application for the Capital One® Spark® Cash for Business, but you can learn more here, on our advertising partner's website.

If you’re looking for higher rewards on all of your purchases, not just select categories, check out the Capital One® Spark® Cash for Business (Review).

While it does have an annual fee of $95, it’s waived for the first year. That allows you to get used to the card, giving you some time to see if it’s worth the cost before getting hit with the fee. It also has more benefits than the Discover it Business Card.

Rewards

SPENDING REWARDS
  • 2% cash back on all purchases
INTRODUCTORY BONUS OFFER
  • $500 cash back for spending $4,500 within the first 3 months
    • Return on spend: 11.11%

With 2% cash back on all purchases, you can earn rewards for your regular business spending, such as buying office supplies, paying for your phone or internet, or buying new equipment. You can earn unlimited cash back with no cap, and your rewards never expire.

You can redeem your cash back as a statement credit or a check. Redeeming your rewards for a statement credit tends to be the quickest and easiest method.

While Discover offers 3% cash back your first year, that number drops to 1.5% afterward. The Spark card, which offers 2% cash back on all purchases every year, may provide more overall value, depending on your particular business spending.

There’s another version of this card which offers 1.5% cash back for no annual fee, called the Capital One® Spark® Cash Select for Business (Review). We’ve calculated that if you spend more than $19,000 per year, the Spark Cash card will be more profitable than the Spark Cash Select, after accounting for the annual fee. If you spend less than that, the Spark Cash Select is more profitable. The same is true when comparing the Spark Cash to the Discover it Business, after the first year.

Benefits

The benefits of the Capital One Spark Cash card are more numerous than what you get from the Discover it Business Card.

The benefits you get will depend on your card’s service level — Visa Platinum (basic) or Visa Signature (upgraded). The service level you get will depend on your creditworthiness.

The Visa Platinum level has fewer benefits than the Visa Signature. Below are the benefits available to Visa Signature cardholders. Visa Platinum cardholders won’t get a few of the better perks, like the shopping discounts, SavingsEdge, and Luxury Hotel Collection.

  • Reports to the Business Credit Bureaus: The Capital One Spark Cash card reports your activity to three of the major business credit bureaus: Dun & Bradstreet, Experian Business, Small Business Financial Exchange. The regular consumer bureaus will receive activity reports as well.
  • Free Employee Cards: You can get an unlimited number of free employee cards.
  • Quarterly and Year-End Summaries: Like the Discover it Business Card, the Capital One Spark Cash card can help simplify your taxes. You’ll get custom, itemized reports of your spending for both primary and employee cards.
  • Downloadable Purchase Records: Download your records to Quicken, QuickBooks, or Excel.
  • Spark Business Customer Service Representatives: Speak with specially trained reps whenever you’d like for help with any questions you have. Call toll-free, 1-800-867-0904.
  • 24/7 Concierge Service: Call the number on the back of your card for non-emergency assistance, such as help with travel arrangements or reservations.
  • Visa® SavingsEdge: Get up to 15% off at merchants, including gas stations and hotels, when you shop through the Visa SavingsEdge shopping portal.
  • Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection: You can access perks, benefits, and discounts at over 900 hotels worldwide. Some of these benefits include automatic room upgrades, complimentary breakfast, and late check out. If you’re a frequent traveler, this benefit provides more value than the Discover it Business Card can offer.
  • Fine Wine & Food: You can get discounts at over 50 wineries in Sonoma County, California.
  • Sports Experiences: Get discounts and benefits for a variety of sports experiences, such as discounts on tee times at golf clubs. For business owners who need to take out clients, this can be a useful perk.
  • Shopping Discounts: Visa Signature cardholders have access to a selection of discounts and offers at a wide variety of retailers, like Macy’s and Amazon.
  • Shopping Protections: You’ll get Purchase Security to cover your items against theft and damage, Extended Warranties, and Price Protection.
  • Travel Protections: You’ll receive some travel protections, such as Travel and Emergency Assistance Services, Auto Rental Collision Damage Waivers, and a Roadside Dispatch Service.

Terms & Fees

The card has an annual fee of $95, but it is waived for the first year. There is no introductory APR offer for new purchases or balance transfers.

With the 2% cash back rate, you’d need to spend $4,750 with the Spark card to offset the $95 annual fee. Unless you’ll spend much more than that per year, it would be more profitable to go with the Discover card because it has no annual fee to offset.

There are no foreign transaction fees, making the Spark Cash an excellent choice for travel.

If you’re a business owner who is frequently on the move and looking for more rewards and luxurious benefits, the Business Platinum Card® from American Express OPEN (Review) is a terrific option. It’s on the other end of the spectrum of the Discover it Business Card, charging an annual fee of $450. However, its benefits and rewards more than make up for it.

Rewards

SPENDING REWARDS
  • 5X Membership Rewards points per dollar on:
    • Flights booked through Amex Travel
    • Prepaid hotels booked through Amex Travel
  • 2X Membership Rewards points per dollar on other eligible purchases from Amex Travel
  • 1.5X Membership Rewards points per dollar on eligible purchases of $5,000 or more
  • 1X Membership Rewards point per dollar on all other purchases
INTRODUCTORY BONUS OFFERS
  • 50,000 bonus points for spending $10,000 in purchases in the first 3 months
    • Value: $250–$1,000 (assuming 0.5–2 cents per point)
    • Return on spend: 2.5–10%
  • 25,000 bonus points for spending an additional $10,000 in purchases in the first 3 months
    • Value: $125–$500 (assuming 0.5–2 cents per point)
    • Return on spend: 1.25–5%
Redemption Bonus
  • Get 35% of your points back when redeeming for eligible flights

The Business Platinum Card from American Express is a powerful rewards card, although it’s limited to mostly airline and hotel spending.

Basic redemptions will only yield 1 cent per point, giving you a maximum 5% cash back equivalent. But you can also transfer those points to a variety of airline and hotel partners, where they could be worth 2 cents or more each.

That would give you a cash back equivalent of 10% or more when spending in the 5X categories. Expensive purchases of over $5,000, which provide 1.5X points, could give a cash back equivalent of 3% or more, which isn’t bad at all for non-category purchases. But for other purchases you’ll probably want to go with another rewards card with different bonus categories.

If you can transfer points for a value of 2 cents or more, you’d be getting a 2% cash back equivalent on non-category purchases under $5,000. That’s better than the 1.5% back you’ll get with the Discover it Business card after its first year, but it depends on finding good point transfer deals.

The signup bonuses can add some significant value, although you’ll need to spend quite a bit to get them. Some businesses may be able to easily spend $20,000 in the first 3 months to get both bonuses, but others may find that level of spending out of reach.

Benefits

While the rewards are substantial, most of the Business Platinum Card’s value comes from its benefits. The benefits are extensive enough to offset the hefty annual fee.

For a growing business, the card provides added protections and comfort, especially for those who need to travel often. Its comprehensive benefits are in a different class entirely than the Discover it Business Card.

  • Reports to Business Credit Bureaus: As long as your account is in good standing, the activity will be reported to Dun & Bradstreet and Small Business Finance Exchange.
  • $200 Annual Airline Credit: Cardholders can select an airline each year to earn a statement credit for up $200 in fees. This credit is only good for incidental fees, like baggage, and not flight tickets
  • Global Lounge Collection: Cardholders get complimentary access to over 1,000 airport lounges across 120 countries, including American Express Centurion Lounges and Priority Pass (both lounges and restaurants).
  • Fee Credit for Global Entry or TSA Pre✓™: Signing up for programs like Global Entry or TSA Pre✓ can make getting through security much simpler. Amex will refund the application fee for one of these programs. You’ll get up to $100 in statement credits to pay for this fee, once every four years.
  • Automatic Starwood Preferred Guest Gold Status: Cardholders get complimentary Starwood Preferred Guest Gold Status without needing to meet any minimum stay requirements. You must manually enroll to activate this benefit.
  • Automatic Hilton Honors Gold Status: Cardholders can sign up for complimentary Hilton Honors Gold status to get better benefits and services at Hilton properties.
  • The Hotel Collection: Cardholders can receive a credit for up to $75 to cover incidental expenses at hotels, for every eligible stay of two nights or more.
  • Lowest Hotel Rates Guarantee: If you book an eligible prepaid hotel room through Amex Travel and then find the same room being advertised online for a lower price before check-in, you can be refunded for the difference.
  • Platinum Dining Program: American Express holds a reservation for you at over 1,000 top restaurants. Just call your concierge service and select “Dining” from the menu.
  • Boingo WiFi Access: You’ll get complimentary access to unlimited WiFi at more than a million Boingo hotspots worldwide, helping you do business while on the go.
  • 10 Annual Passes for GoGo Preferred In-Flight WiFi Access: Cardholders get 10 annual single flight segment passes for Gogo in-flight internet access.

Terms & Fees

The Business Platinum card has an annual fee of $450. It’s a charge card so you don’t need to worry about any APRs, because you have to pay the card off in full each month.

There are no foreign transaction fees, which is good news for travelers. However, American Express isn’t widely accepted overseas. It may be a good idea to have another card, like some of the cards mentioned above, in addition to the Business Platinum card when traveling internationally.
