Our Rating: 5 Out of 5 Stars

We’re awarding the Brex Life Sciences Card 5 out of 5 Stars.

The card’s unique, industry-focused rewards program is quite generous, and it’s complemented by several useful perks to make expense management easier.

Companies that meet Brex’s strict requirements get the card without a personal guarantee, too — that’s a rare benefit.

Why We Like It

  • Diverse Brex Exclusive rewards program offers extra points for industry-specific purchases (conferences, lab supplies) as well as Brex Travel, a category with more universal appeal
  • Proprietary systems include receipt-matching, intelligent reconciliation, and more to help streamline expense management
  • Direct integration with big-name enterprise resource planning (ERP) software, such as QuickBooks, Xero, NetSuite, and Expensify
  • No personal guarantee, credit check, or SSN required; you just have meet the issuer’s standards for approval
  • Reports to two major business credit bureaus to help you build business credit (Dun & Bradstreet and Experian Business)
  • Typically provides a higher limit than most other business credit cards
  • No annual fee
  • Virtual cards are available at no extra cost
  • First five employee cards are free, and they’re only $5 afterward
  • No foreign transaction fee

Why It Could Be Better

  • Smaller businesses may not be able to meet the issuer’s approval requirements
  • Unavailable to sole proprietors
  • Somewhat limited point transfer options
  • Highest-earning categories may have limited appeal

  • Credit limit based on equity in your company, spending patterns, and cash raised

The Brex Life Sciences Card isn’t your run-of-the-mill business credit card. Rather than awarding a few points here and there for travel purchases, or a flat cash back rate, the card boasts a generous rewards program geared toward startups in the life sciences industry.

Successful applicants also get a few useful benefits, including proprietary expense management technology, easily accessible virtual credit cards, and simple integration with common accounting software.

As with other Brex products, the requirements you have to meet to get the card are somewhat strict. But if you do qualify, you don’t have to provide a personal guarantee or a Social Security number, or submit to a credit inquiry. All in all, it’s a sweat deal.

Insider Advice: Getting the Most Out of Your Card

  • Commit to Brex: The Brex Exclusive rewards program requires you to commit to the Brex Life Sciences Card as your exclusive corporate credit/charge card. You’ll only earn 1X point per dollar after your first two months as a cardholder if you don’t. That’s a bit restrictive, but this commitment could be worthwhile, as Brex Exclusive is a fairly generous rewards program.
  • Attend conferences: Conferences are a great way to link up with key industry figures while spreading the word about your company’s mission and accomplishments. Now, you can earn points on every conference ticket you buy.
  • Pay for business travel: Meeting with a prospective client? Pitching additional investors? Book travel directly through Brex to score rewards that can, in turn, be put toward future travel (or redeemed in other ways).
  • Stock up on lab supplies: Your business probably spends a ton of money on lab supplies, so why not rack up rewards in the process?
  • Redeem through Brex Travel or for statement credits: Both options give you one cent per point, which is a good value, though it’s less than you might be able to get with a point transfer.
  • Transfer your points: One cent per point isn’t bad, but if you can do better, you should. Try transferring your points to one of Brex’s travel partners and redeeming them there, or through other members of a partner’s airline alliance.

The Rewards

There’s nothing else quite like the Brex Life Sciences Card when it comes to rewards (for the time being, at least). While most rewards cards have a broader range of appeal, this card’s version of the Brex Exclusive rewards program is specifically tailored to suit the demands of a single industry.

On top of its specificity, the card’s reward structure is just plain generous, with high rates in its bonus categories.

You can secure a return on spend of up to 7% if you redeem for travel or statement credits directly through Brex (points are worth a cent each). But Brex does allow point transfers to a selection of travel partners, so with a bit of patience and a keen eye, you may be able to transfer your points for an even better deal.

Earning

Spending Rewards
  • 7X points per dollar on Conference tickets
  • 4X points per dollar on Brex Travel (flights, hotels, Airbnb)
  • 3X points per dollar on Lab supplies
  • 1X point per dollar on all other purchases
Introductory Bonus Offer
  • 30,000 bonus points for spending $1,000

The card’s spending categories are fairly clear-cut.

The conference tickets category is particularly unambiguous; buy tickets and get your points. This isn’t a category you’ll see very often.

Lab supplies, another uncommon category, gives you a little more room for interpretation, though the Brex website says merchants like VWR, Thermo Fisher, Invitrogen, and more are included. Brex support can probably provide a clear explanation of which merchants fall under this category.

You may have to think a bit more about how you’ll use the Brex Travel category, particularly if you consider business travel a key expenditure. There are lots of great business travel credit cards out there, and many offer higher reward rates on travel, along with perks, like airport lounge access and TSA PreCheck/Global Entry fee credits, that this Brex card lacks.

So you might want to consider other options (like these business credit cards with no foreign transaction fees) if travel is a high priority. It’s not the focal point of this card, though, so it shouldn’t detract too much from the overall package.

You’ll also want to keep in mind that Brex Travel supposedly provides steep discounts, though there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able take advantage of these deals.

Redeeming

There are a few ways to redeem the points you earn with your Brex card. Brex points never expire, and there’s no minimum or maximum redemption value.

Cash your points in for statement credits and you’ll get one cent per point, which is comparable to what most business credit cards offer.

You can also redeem Brex points for travel at one cent per point. That may sound less appealing than other prominent rewards programs, where you can find a better value if you redeem carefully, but Brex Travel allegedly provides “savings of up to 30%–60%.” It can’t hurt to check out what the portal has to offer if you do a lot of business travel.

Transferring Brex Points

As with many major travel rewards cards, Brex cardholders can transfer points to select airline loyalty programs. Points are transferred at a 1:1 rate for Brex Exclusive members and 1.5:1 for non-members.

Brex’s partner list is currently somewhat short, but each partner airline is part of an airline alliance, with the full list covering three well-known alliances. So, after you transfer points to a Brex partner, you should be able to redeem your points with other members of that partner’s alliance, too. That gives you lots of ways to search for a better value than one cent per point.

Brex airline partners currently include all of the following:

Airline Partners
Aeromexico Club Premier Air France/KLM Flying Blue Avianca LifeMiles
Cathay Pacific Asia Miles Qantas Frequent Flyer Program Singapore KrisFlyer
JetBlue TrueBlue

This list includes members of SkyTeam, Oneworld, and Star Alliance, all high-profile airline alliances.

The Benefits

The Brex Life Sciences Card features an impressive selection of benefits. Most notably, you get a slew of statement credits — worth thousands of dollars, if you can use them — for a variety of popular business tools.

The card also provides a few nifty tools that many businesses may find useful for expense management.

  • Statement credits: $5,000 for Amazon Web Services, 15% off an Enterprise License with Science Exchange, $500 for Twilio, 40% off your first year of QuickBooks, 20% off an annual Zoom subscription, and 25% off 12 months of eligible Slack plans, among others
  • Brex Travel: Use unique travel profiles to book corporate travel directly through Brex, and earn 4X points per dollar in the process. Depending on the trip, the portal can reportedly provide savings of up to 30%–60%. Points earned can be redeemed through Brex Travel, too.
  • Proprietary expense management tech: Transaction data cleanup, receipt capture, and other proprietary technologies make it easier to keep track of business expenses.
  • Accounting tool integration: Connect software like Quickbooks, Expensify, and Xero to your Brex account with ease.
  • Higher card limit: Brex evaluates a unique mix of criteria, including your business bank accounts, investors, spending patterns, and equity with the goal of providing credit limits up to 10–20 times higher than competing cards.
  • Virtual cards: Once you’re approved, get immediate access to virtual versions of your Brex card for online and phone purchases.
  • U.S.-based support: Phone, email, and chat options let you access Brex support when, where, and how it’s best for you.
  • Fraud monitoring: Machine intelligence and human analysis work hand-in-hand 24/7 to keep your personal information safe (check out our fraud prevention guide for tips to stay secure).

The Terms & Fees

Purchase APR Balance Transfer APR Cash Advance APR
Not Applicable - Paid in Full Monthly None None
Annual Fee Foreign Transaction Fee
$0 None
Balance Transfer Fee Cash Advance Fee
None None
Penalty APR Late Fee Returned Payment Fee
None None None

There aren’t many fees here, partly because the Brex Life Sciences Card is a charge card. That means your statement balance must be paid in full each billing period; you can’t carry a balance for more than about a month.

In this case, your Brex card account is usually connected directly to your business’ bank account, and money is automatically withdrawn, so there’s no need for late fees or interest.

The only fee you’ll really see is for new cards, and that’s not until after you’ve received your first five for free. After that, each additional card costs $5 per year.

The Bottom Line

For life sciences companies looking for a life sciences credit card, the Brex Life Sciences Card (Review) is in a league of its own.

Great rewards, forward-thinking expense management technology, and the fact that there’s no credit inquiry or personal guarantee required combine to create a credit card offer that’s — as of now — one of a kind. Naturally, not everyone’s going to benefit from a card designed for a specific industry, but that’s part of what makes it so special.

The primary drawback is that the issuer’s requirements are somewhat strict. That’s to be expected with corporate credit cards, though. If you don’t qualify, you may just have to stick with a more accessible business credit card until you do.

How Do You Apply for the Brex Life Sciences Card?

The Brex application process is a little different than most normal credit cards (more about business credit card applications here) because of the issuer’s unique standards, but it’s still very simple.

First, check the issuer’s qualifications and requirements below. If you don’t think your business measures up, wait until you’ve grown a bit. You can consider an alternative in the meantime.

If you believe your business qualifies for the Brex Life Sciences Card, click “Apply Now” near the card name. You’ll be directed to the official Brex website, where you can then click “Open an account” and provide the necessary information to get the ball rolling.

What Credit Scores Do You Need for the Brex Life Sciences Card?

Neither your business nor personal credit scores impact your ability to get the Brex Life Sciences Card. There’s no credit check or personal guarantee involved. Instead, approval is entirely dependent on whether you meet the issuer’s cardholder standards.

Qualifications and Requirements

You must:

  • Be based in the U.S.
  • Work for a corporation or another non-individual liability company
  • Have an employer identification number (EIN)
  • Maintain a corporate bank account with a balance of at least $100,000, or $50,000 with professional investors

You can’t qualify for a Brex card if:

  • You are a sole proprietor
  • You are involved in any of Brex’s prohibited activities (gambling, prostitution, get-rich-quick schemes, and more)

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can get the Brex Life Sciences Card?

Only U.S.-based companies with Employer Identification Numbers (EINs) that measure up to Brex’s cardholder standards can qualify for the issuer’s cards. Business types that may be eligible for the Brex Life Sciences Card include:

  • C-Corps
  • S-Corps
  • LLCs
  • LLPs

Entities that are not eligible for Brex cards include:

  • Consumers
  • Sole proprietors
  • Unincorporated partnerships
  • Unregistered companies
  • Companies registered outside the U.S.

How much revenue do you need to get the Brex Life Sciences Card?

There are no hard-and-fast revenue requirements to qualify for the Brex Life Sciences Card. With that said, there are a few financial requirements you’ll have to meet to be approved.

Companies with professional investors must maintain a bank account balance of either $50,000 (if you connect your bank account to Brex) or $100,000 (if you don’t connect your bank account with Brex) at all times.

If you’re self-funded, you must maintain a bank account balance of $100,000 at all times regardless.

Other factors Brex will analyze include your company’s business model, source of funds, and spending patterns, among others. Contact Brex directly for more details.

What’s the credit limit of the Brex Life Sciences Card?

Your Brex credit limit will depend on a few different factors, including:

  • Cash your company has raised (including grants you’ve received)
  • Equity in your company
  • Company spending patterns

You won’t know your card’s credit limit until it’s issued, but you may be able to contact Brex for more information on its limit-setting practices. The issuer reportedly provides credit limits up to 10–20 times larger than competing cards.

How do you qualify for Brex Exclusive?

Upon successful card application, Brex will enroll you in the Brex Exclusive rewards program for two months. After those two months have elapsed, you’ll be asked by Brex to confirm your “exclusivity” — that the Brex card is the only corporate rewards card you’re using — in order to continue using the program’s enhanced rates.

If you’re not willing to use Brex exclusively, you’ll no longer qualify for the program and will receive only a point per dollar spent. (Explore other business credit cards if you’d rather not be restricted to one.)

Interestingly, our Brex contact has suggested that Brex may be lenient with this restriction in certain cases. We can’t guarantee this is true for you, however, so you may want to contact Brex directly with any questions.

Do you need good personal credit to get the Brex Life Sciences Card?

No! Applying for a Brex corporate charge card requires neither a credit inquiry nor a personal guarantee, and will therefore never impact your personal credit.

Alternatives to the Brex Life Sciences Card

You’re probably not going to find another credit card that caters so precisely to the life sciences industry. But even so, the business credit card landscape is rich, and you may be able to find something that’ll make the cut (or serve your business even better).

While the Brex Corporate Card (Review) wasn’t developed for a specific industry, its generous rewards program and valuable perks could certainly come in handy for science startups.

This Brex card’s rewards appeal to a diverse audience, and it includes the same discounts and statement credits you get with the life sciences card.

Spending Rewards
  • 7X points per dollar on Rideshare services (including Uber, Lyft, taxi, etc.)
  • 4X points per dollar on Brex Travel (flights, hotels, Airbnb)

  • 2X points per dollar on Recurring software purchases
  • 1X point per dollar on all other purchases
Introductory Bonus Offer
  • 30,000 bonus points for spending $1,000

Where the life sciences card rewards most generously for conference tickets, the corporate card prioritizes rideshare services, followed by travel and restaurants. All three of these categories could prove useful if you’re often on the road, whether for conferences, investor presentations, or any other business-related engagements.

Software is yet another great category. In this day and age, there’s a very good chance that your business is paying for at least a few recurring software subscriptions.

  • Only available to corporations and other non-individual liability companies
  • Alternate rewards program due to COVID-19, through 9/30/20: 7X points on collaboration tools; 3X points on food delivery; 2X points on recurring software purchases; 1X point on all other purchases (Brex is one of many issuers that’s made pandemic-related changes)
  • Perks: Credits for various services, including $5,232 for ZenDesk and $5,000 for Amazon Web Services; discounts for other services, including WeWork and Salesforce;

The Stripe Corporate Card is another one of the few business charge cards available with no personal guarantee, and it comes with a similar selection of valuable benefits. Unlike the Brex Life Sciences Card, however, the Stripe card features a reward structure that’s much more universally appealing.

The Stripe card’s main drawback is that it may (like the Brex card) be tough to qualify for. The issuer’s standards aren’t very clear — applicants are vetted via their history with Stripe, payment volume, and bank account history — but they’re probably toward the stricter side, since it’s called a “corporate card.”

Spending Rewards
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases

The Stripe card’s rewards are tailored to your actual spending. That’s a useful arrangement if you think your major expenditures might change from one month to the next. Just spend as you typically would, and you’ll earn 2% cash back in the categories where you spent the most once each billing cycle closes.

  • Available by invite only (you can request an invitation)
  • Perks: $5,000 in Amazon Web Services credits, three months of Basic Shopify for free, $436 in Zendesk credits per month for the first year, 40% off Hubspot for the first year, 50% off Expensify for six months, and more

The Capital One® Spark® Cash for Business (Review) couldn’t be more different than the Brex Life Sciences Card. It’s a simple cash back credit card designed for small businesses. There’s a flat-rate rewards program, a handful of useful benefits, and a low annual fee.

So why suggest it as an alternative to the Brex card?

Simple — the Spark Cash is a great card that virtually any business can benefit from.

Its flat-rate rewards structure requires no strategizing; you earn the same thing on every single purchase. And though you’ll have to submit to a personal credit inquiry and provide a personal guarantee to get this card, it’s just a standard credit card application process, which could be easier for some businesspeople to manage than trying to meet Brex’s standards.

Spending Rewards
  • 2% cash back on every purchase
Introductory Bonus Offer
  • $500 cash bonus for spending $4,500 in the first 3 months

The Spark Cash earns 2% cash back on every purchase with no spending limit, so you only have to spend $4,750 a year to offset the annual fee. That’s likely pretty low for most life sciences companies.

Though this is an excellent rewards program on its own, it’s also great for pairing with other, more specialized business credit cards. You could easily use it with the Brex Life Sciences Card, opting for Brex whenever spending in one of its high-rate bonus categories, and sticking with the Spark Cash for everything else.

  • Shopping and travel protections: Purchase Security, Price Protection, Cell Phone Protection, MasterRental Insurance Coverage, Lost Luggage Reimbursement, and more
  • Purchase and Balance Transfer APR: 18.49% Variable
  • No foreign transaction fee
  • Annual fee: $0 intro for first year; $95 after that

Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card

Our rating
Min. credit level Excellent
Details
Annual Fee $95
Regular APR 15.99%-20.99% Variable

The Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card (Review) is a versatile business credit card with solid reward rates on several types of common business expenses.

Its benefits are fairly simple, but the card is known for allowing point transfers to a wide variety of high-profile travel loyalty programs, from British Airways Executive Club to Marriott Bonvoy.

It’s a great card to use alone or paired with the Brex Life Sciences card.

Spending Rewards
  • 5X Ultimate Rewards points per dollar on Lyft rides
  • 3X Ultimate Rewards points per dollar on up to $150,000 spent per year for:
    • Travel
    • Shipping purchases
    • Internet, cable, and phone services
    • Advertising purchases made with social media sites and search engines
  • 1X Ultimate Rewards point per dollar on all other purchases
Introductory Bonus Offer
  • 100,000 bonus points for spending $15,000 in the first 3 months after account opening

It’s probably safe to say that most life sciences companies spend a lot of money in at least one of the above bonus categories.

The main downfall? You’ll only earn at this card’s bonus rates on up to $150,000 in annual spending (except for Lyft purchases). After that, you’re knocked down to 1X point. That could be seen as a generous limit for some businesses, or a dealbreaker for others.

  • 25% point bonus: When redeeming for travel expenses through Chase Ultimate Rewards
  • Point transfer: Transfer points at a 1:1 rate to various airline and hotel loyalty programs, including British Airways Executive Club, United MileagePlus, Marriott Bonvoy, and World of Hyatt.
  • Cell phone protection: Pay your cell phone bill with your Ink Business Preferred to get coverage against theft and damage, up to $600 per claim with a $100 deductible.
  • Shopping and travel protections: Including purchase protection, extended warranty protection, trip cancellation/trip interruption insurance, an auto rental collision damage waiver, and more
  • Purchase and Balance Transfer APR: 15.99%-20.99% Variable
  • No foreign transaction fee
  • Annual fee: $95
