The Amazon Rewards Visa Signature is an all-around solid card. It’s hard to beat 3% cash back at Amazon for no annual fee, and the 2% cash back for its other categories is pretty decent too. But if you don’t do the majority of your shopping with Amazon, it might not be too rewarding when compared to other categorical rewards cards.

Because it’s a Visa Signature, you can expect some solid perks as well. If you’re looking for a card to take with you while traveling, you could do worse than this one. It has an impressive arsenal of travel protections that give your luggage, and your body, some added security. Plus, there’s no foreign transaction fee to worry about if you’re headed out of the country.

If you shop with the massive online retailer often, you should consider adding this card to your wallet.

Insider tip

If you’re an Amazon Prime member, you’ll apply instead for the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card (Review). Unlike the non-Prime version, it’s metal, and it offers 5% cash back at Amazon and Whole Foods rather than 3%.

Insider Advice: Getting the Most Out of Your Card

  • Unless you have a gas card, fill up with this one: 2% cash back is a decent rate if you don’t already have a credit card that earns a higher rate for gas. If that’s the case, be sure to top off with the Amazon card.
  • Dine in or out: Whether you’re having dinner delivered or going out, you’ll earn 2% cash back for the expense.
  • Travel with confidence: Cardmembers have access to Travel Accident Insurance, Baggage Delay Insurance, Lost Luggage Reimbursement, and Travel and Emergency Assistance. Basically, if anything goes wrong, the Amazon card has you covered. And you won’t have to worry about foreign transaction fees if you’re leaving the U.S.
  • Get help planning trips: The Visa Signature concierge service can help cardholders with all sorts of non-emergency tasks. Need help finding flights or hotel arrangements? Ask your concierge. It can also find entertainment tickets or make dinner reservations for when you land.
  • Protect your Amazon purchases: The items you buy from Amazon will have some added security thanks to Purchase Protection and Extended Warranty. If an eligible item is lost or stolen, no need to panic. And be sure to keep the receipt. If an item has a manufacturer’s warranty of three years or less, it’ll be safe for another year.
  • Buy gift cards: Buying gift cards, either at a drugstore, Whole Foods, or on Amazon, is a good way to circumvent the bonus category restrictions. If you were to purchase a Best Buy gift card on Amazon, you’d earn 3% cash back for the transaction, meaning you’d essentially be earning 3% cash back for shopping at Best Buy. This applies to any gift card available.
  • Maximize your rewards: Combining this card with a flat-rate card, like the Wells Fargo Active Cash Card (Review), would boost the return on your spending. Use the Amazon card for Amazon.com purchases and the Active Cash for everything else. Check out the best credit cards for earning rewards here.

The Rewards

Earning

Spending Rewards
  • 3% cash back at:
    • Amazon.com
    • Whole Foods Market
  • 2% cash back at:
    • Gas stations
    • Restaurants
    • Drugstores
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases
Introductory Bonus
  • $50 Amazon.com gift card instantly upon account approval

The welcome bonus is instantly added to your account, so if there’s anything sitting on your Wish List, perhaps now’s the time to get it.

Redeeming

The cash back you earn will show up as points on your monthly statement and when you log in to your Chase account. They are typically worth 1¢ each. So, for a $100 gas purchase, you’d get 200 points, which are worth $2.00. You can only redeem once you’ve earned 2,000 points.

Here are the redemption options:

  • Deposit into a bank account (best value)
  • Statement credits
  • Checkout on Amazon.com
  • Gift cards

While it may seem like a convenient choice at face value, avoid using your rewards at checkout. It would actually end up leaving you with less cash back than you’d typically get.

For example, if your total comes to $100, and you redeem 2,000 points (the equivalent of $20), the amount charged to your Amazon card would be $80.

From that, you’d earn $2.40 in cash back ($80 x 3%) instead of earning $3 from the original $100 balance ($100 x 3%). You might be saying, that’s only a few cents, no biggie. And you’d be right, at least initially. But if you consistently redeem at checkout, those cents could grow to a much more substantial sum.

Redeeming at checkout here and there won’t break the bank, but you’d be missing out on potential rewards. Your best bet is to deposit rewards into a bank account. That way the money goes directly into your bank, rather than towards a balance you need to pay off down the road.

The Amazon Rewards card comes with an impressive selection of Visa Signature benefits for a credit card without an annual fee. The perks make it an effective choice for buying items from your couch or hopping on a plane for a trip.

The Bottom Line

The Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card is a solid choice if you’re in the market for a well-rounded and rewarding card. It offers a good cash back rate for Amazon’s massive selection of goods, plus everyday purchases like gas and eating out.

The benefits create a great opportunity for the average consumer, protecting your new purchases and making sure you’re covered while you travel. This card should be considered by anyone who shops frequently with Amazon, especially considering there isn’t an annual fee. However, if Amazon is only an occasional expense, another rewards card might suit you better.

What’s the difference between the Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card and the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature?

The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card (Review) requires an Amazon Prime subscription and is issued as a metal card. It also provides 5% cash back rather than 3% cash back for Amazon and Whole Foods purchases, and comes with a larger welcome bonus.

How Do I Apply for the Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card?

Follow the link below to be taken to Amazon’s site, where you can log in and follow links to reach an application. From there, you can securely apply. You should typically hear back instantly with Chase’s decision.

What Credit Scores Do I Need to Qualify for the Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card?

It’s recommended that you have fair credit before applying.

To qualify for fair credit, your credit scores would need to be at least 580 for FICO and 650 for VantageScore.

However, credit card issuers will ask for additional information. Things like income and monthly rent or mortgage payments factor into the decision. That means even if your credit scores aren’t at the recommended level, there’s still a chance for approval. But it also means even if your scores are high enough, you could be denied.

Issued as a metal card, it earns 5% cash back for Amazon and Whole Foods purchases. If you’re already a Prime member, this is the card you’d be applying for. It also comes with a larger welcome bonus.

Why We Picked It

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express (Review) provides some of the highest cash back rates for gas and groceries.

This card offers 6% cash back at U.S. supermarkets and on select U.S. streaming services. It also features 3% cash back at U.S. gas stations, beating out the Amazon card’s 2% for gas. And unlike the Amazon card, you aren’t locked in to shopping at one grocery store. Whole Foods Market purchases are even eligible for the 6% rate.

Plus, if you use the Blue Cash Preferred to buy Amazon gift cards at a qualifying store, you’d earn 6% cash back for the purchase, effectively giving you 6% back at Amazon. So the Blue Cash Preferred would be more rewarding, hands down.

It does carry an annual fee. However, it’s such a rewarding card that it pays for itself without too much spending. It doesn’t come with as extensive a list of shopping and travel protections as the Amazon card, but the perks still hold their own.

If you’re looking for a flexible and rewarding card for your gas and groceries, look no further. This is one of the best cash back credit cards available.

Why We Picked It

The Wells Fargo Active Cash Card (Review) is a newer card that’s quickly making a name for itself.

Rather than earning cash back rewards across multiple bonus categories, the Active Cash instead provides a flat 2% back for every purchase. That makes it a solid companion card to credit cards that do earn on a variety of different things, like the Amazon Rewards Visa Signature.

If you’re looking for a bit more flexibility, and perhaps simplicity, you could do worse than the Active Cash. The benefits won’t be as impressive, but its 2%-for-everything is hard to beat. And the Active Cash is still a Visa Signature, so it’ll come with a few similar shopping and travel protections.

Why We Picked It

If you don’t like Amazon but still want a huge selection of goods, consider the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi (Review). You’ll need to be a Costco member.

It surpasses the Amazon card’s rewards for gas, offering 4% cash back compared to 2%, but offers less at Costco than the Amazon card does with Amazon. The benefits aren’t nearly as impressive. And while it does earn on travel, there are no travel protections.

Really the only reasons to choose this card over the Amazon Rewards Visa Signature are if you’re already a frequent Costco shopper or you’d prefer not to support Amazon.
