Credit cards that provide cash rewards for gas are some of the most popular on the market. Almost everyone makes gas purchases, so a good gas credit card can be very useful.

Some gas reward cards have annual fees, while others do not. Many of them offer rewards in two different bonus categories, and come with at least some basic benefits.

Here are our picks for the best gas credit cards for the average person. They provide cash back for gas no matter where you buy it, and aren’t limited to one brand or another.

The first two have no annual fees. The third card has an annual fee, but for that you’ll get a good offer that includes high rewards at grocery stores.

The 3 Best Gas Credit Cards

  • Annual Fee: $0
  • Interest Rate: 17.24–23.99% Variable
Quick Card Facts
  • Earn 3% cash back at restaurants and gas stations
  • Earn 1% cash back on all other purchases
  • There is no limit to the amount of rewards you can earn
  • Rewards never expire

The information for AARP® Visa Signature® Card has been collected independently by Credit Card Insider. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

The AARP Visa Signature Card does not require membership in the AARP, despite its name. Anyone can apply.

This rewards credit card offers:

  • 3% cash back at gas stations and restaurants
  • 1% cash back everywhere else
  • $200 cash back signup bonus for spending $500 in 3 months after account opening

These rewards might seem modest at first glance. But this is actually a pretty great deal compared to most other reward credit cards. Many cards have a 3% and a 2% category, but the AARP card offers 3% at both gas stations and restaurants. The signup bonus is better than most too, because you’d usually have to spend at least $1,000 to get a bonus worth $200.

Most of the redemption options provide 1 cent for every cent in cash back you earn. But when redeeming for travel expenses you’ll actually get 1.12 cents for every cent you’ve earned. This is a nice little bonus of over 10%, so be sure to redeem for travel whenever possible.

Since there’s no annual fee, this card can be completely free to use. As long as you avoid interest by paying your balance in full you’ll never have any charges. That means you can earn 3% cash back at the pump (and on dining) at no cost whatsoever.

This card is available at either the basic Visa Platinum or the upgraded Visa Signature level. If you qualify with a credit limit of at least $5,000 you’ll get the Visa Signature. Otherwise you’ll receive the Visa Platinum.

The Visa Platinum card comes with basic protections for shopping and traveling. These protections include:

  • Purchase Protection against damage and theft
  • Return Protection to help you to return items more easily, in more situations
  • Extended Warranties to lengthen the manufacturer’s warranty on eligible products

Visa Signature cards come with more protections. They also have valuable benefits beyond simple insurance plans. These include:

  • Access to the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection, providing discounts and complimentary services while traveling
  • A personal concierge of your very own. Call to get non-emergency help with all kinds of tasks, like making reservations or getting travel information
  • A wide variety of shopping discounts at select retailers, some of which can be quite deep

All these factors make the AARP Visa Signature card a great option for earn if you want a simple way to earn cash back at gas stations. And you’ll get that same deal for restaurants, too.

PenFed Platinum Rewards Visa Signature Card

For People with
Fair Credit

  • Annual Fee: $0
  • Interest Rate: 9.74%–17.99% (Variable)
Quick Card Facts
  • Earn 5 points for every $1 spent on on gas purchases at the pump
  • Earn 3 points for every $1 spent on groceries
  • Earn 1 point for every $1 spent on all other purchases

The PenFed Platinum Rewards Visa Signature has no annual fee. But, it requires you to be a PenFed Credit Union member. You can become a member by depositing as little as $5 in a savings or Share Account with them. And you will be guided through the process when you apply, so PenFed membership shouldn’t stop you from getting this card if you want it.

Becoming a member might definitely be worth it, because this card has some very rewarding bonus categories:

  • 5x points per dollar at gas stations
  • 3x points per dollar at grocery stores
  • 1x point per dollar everywhere else
  • $100 signup bonus for spending $1,500 in the first 90 days

Every point can be worth a maximum of 1 cent. This means you’ll be earning 5% cash back at gas stations and 3% cash back at grocery stores. That’s one of the best reward offers available for gas on any credit card. But take note that the gas category does not include plane and boat fuel.

The $100 signup bonus isn’t that good compared to most other reward cards, requiring $1,500 in purchases to get. For comparison, the AARP card above requires $500 in spending to earn $200. And the Blue Cash Preferred below needs $1,000 in spending to earn $200.

The extra benefits are not bad with the PenFed cash rewards credit card, because it comes at either the Visa Platinum or Visa Signature level. Visa Platinum cards come with basic shopping and travel protections. But Visa Signature cards have upgraded protections and benefits. Visa Signature cardholders will get some valuable travel-related discounts and services, especially at hotels. Exclusive shopping discounts are available at a selection of retailers.

There are a couple issues that potential and current cardmembers should be aware of. The first is that your redemption options are limited with this card. You won’t be able to simply redeem your points as a statement credit.

Instead, you have these redemption options:

  • Merchandise at participating retailers
  • Gift cards/gift certificates at participating retailers
  • Hotel bookings at participating hotels
  • Car rentals at participating rental agencies
  • Flights at participating airlines
  • Other travel expenses like cruises and vacation packages

So you’ll need to hold on to your points until you can redeem them by one of the methods above. And take note that your points will only last for 5 years before they expire.

This is less convenient than most cards, which let you redeem your rewards directly for statement credits. Your points don’t usually expire on the better reward cards, either. But there is a fairly diverse set of merchants to choose from for gift cards and travel services. So most people should be able to find a way to make this program work.

The second issue is that you’ll be charged a $1 fee for every mailed paper statement you get with this card. You can avoid this easily by signing up for electronic statements. But it seems like a bit of an unfriendly fee, and you won’t find it on most credit cards.

There are some issues with this card, to be sure. But the ability to effectively earn 5% cash back on gas can make it all worth it for some people. If you don’t mind redeeming your points for the options above, there shouldn’t be much stopping you from using this card. It’s a great choice to earn rewards every time you fill up your tank.

Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express®

For People with
Excellent Credit

  • Annual Fee: $95
  • Interest Rate: 13.99% - 22.99% Variable
Quick Card Facts
  • Get $200 back after you spend $1,000 in purchases on your new Card in your first 3 months. You will receive the cash back in the form of a statement credit.
  • Hassle-free cash back: no enrollment required, the same great reward categories year-round.
  • Earn Cash Back: 6% US supermarkets up to $6,000 per year in purchases, 3% US gas stations & select US dept stores, 1% other purchases. Terms and limitations apply.
  • Cash back is received in the form of Reward Dollars that can be redeemed as a statement credit.
  • 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 15 months, then a variable rate, currently 12.99% to 21.99%, based on your creditworthiness and other factors.
  • Terms and limitations apply.

The Blue Cash Preferred Card (Review) has an annual fee of $95, unlike the cards above. But for that you’ll get:

  • 6% cash back at grocery stores on the first $6,000 spent annually
  • 3% cash back at gas stations and select U.S. department stores
  • 1% cash back everywhere else
  • $200 cash back signup bonus for spending $1,000 in the first 3 months

So for that fee you’ll get an unlimited 3% cash back on gas purchases and at department stores. Other cards often have a limit, but you won’t find one here. Plus you’ll get the very high rate of 6% back at grocery stores and supermarkets.

The 3% back on gas is as good as most cards get. And the 6% back at grocery stores is probably the best grocery offer available on any rewards card. Those bonus categories, plus the $200 signup bonus, make this a very rewarding card for those frequent purchases.

This card comes with a 0% introductory APR on both purchases and balance transfers for 12 months. That’s something the cards above don’t have. This will let you pay off some large purchases over a year at no interest. Just make the minimum payments and finish paying off the purchases by the time the period ends. You can also transfer a balance onto this card from from an account with a higher interest rate. That will save you money when interest stops accruing every month.

The extra benefits for this card are about average. They mostly consist of basic shopping and travel protections. These are perks like Purchase Protection, Extended Warranty, and Fraud Protection. But you’ll also get free 2-day shipping on eligible items with Shoprunner, which some people might use quite often. Also, access to a variety of great deals through Amex Offers. The Amex Offers include deals like:

  • FedEx Office: Spend $10 or more, get $5 back
  • Sam’s Club: Spend $45 or more, get $25 back
  • Reebok: Spend $100 or more, get $20 back
  • Banana Republic: Spend $125 or more, get $25 back

This card is quite good for gas alone. But if you want a card for grocery spending as well it will be hard to beat the Blue Cash Preferred.

There’s another version of this card with no annual fee, the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express (Review). It offers:

  • 3% cash back at grocery stores on the first $6,000 spent
  • 2% cash back at gas stations and select U.S. department stores
  • 1% cash back everywhere else
  • $150 cash back for spending $500 in the first 3 months

So you’ll get less rewarding terms with the Everyday cash rewards credit card. But you also won’t have an annual fee to deal with. This is a good option for people who like the Blue Cash Preferred but don’t spend as much on groceries. We’ve calculated that if you spend more than $3,000 per year on groceries, you’ll get more value out of the Preferred card. Otherwise, go with the Blue Cash Everyday.

  • Annual Fee: $0
  • Interest Rate: 17.24%, 20.24%, or 22.24% (Variable)
Quick Card Facts
  • 7 points per dollar at Hilton-branded hotels and resorts
  • 5 points per dollar at US restaurants, US gas stations, US supermarkets
  • 3 Hilton Honors points per dollar on regular spending
  • Signup bonus: 40,000 Hilton Honors Points Bonus after spending $750 in the first 3 months
  • Automatic Hilton Honors Silver Status
  • Gold status if you spend $20,000/year

The Hilton Honors™ Card from American Express is designed for travelers who frequently stay at Hilton properties. It has no annual fee.

This rewards card provides:

  • 7x Hilton Honors points per dollar at hotels and resorts within the Hilton Portfolio
  • 5x Hilton Honors points per dollar at U.S. gas stations, supermarkets, and restaurants
  • 3x Hilton Honors points per dollar on all other purchases
  • 50,000 bonus Hilton Honors points for spending $1,000 in the first 3 months after account opening

You’ll need to redeem your points through the Hilton Honors system. That’s not a bad thing because it has quite a few options like free night stays, vacation packages, and resort-specific services.

The value of your points will differ based on how you redeem them. It will depend on the particular hotel, time of year, location, etc. But we’ve calculated that the 5x points per dollar category can provide the equivalent of at least 4.4% cash back when redeemed in certain ways.

This is a great deal for a card with no annual fee. And that means you’ll be earning over 6% cash back when making purchases from Hilton at the 7x rate.

There are quite a few other attractive benefits as well. You’ll get complimentary Hilton Honors Silver Status, the ability to earn free night stays, bonus points for booking online, and shopping/travel protections.

Overall it has the potential to be a very rewarding card. That’s especially true because it has no annual fee to worry about every year. But once again this is a travel credit card designed for people on the move, who frequently stay at Hilton properties.

Some reward credit cards have bonus categories that rotate every 3 months, instead of providing a set amount throughout the year. These cards will usually have gas stations as one of the categories.

The best rotating reward card for gas is the Discover it (Review), which has no annual fee. The Discover it offers 5% cash back in the following categories in 2018:

Quarter 5% Cash Back Category
January – March Gas Stations & Wholesale Clubs
April – June Grocery Stores
July – September Restaurants
October – December Amazon.com & Wholesale Clubs

You’ll be able to earn that 5% back on the first $1,500 you spend in the category each quarter. After that you’ll earn 1% back.

As you can see, you’ll get 5% cash back on gas purchases from January through March in 2018. Although this only lasts for a few months, you’ll have other categories throughout the year in which you can earn rewards.

But Discover also has their Cashback Match offer, which is unique among card issuers. This will double the total amount of cash back rewards earned in the first year of use.

So that means you’ll be getting 10% cash back at gas stations and the other spending categories. That’s probably the best gas reward available on any credit card. Since the bonus category is limited to the first $1,500 you spend every quarter, you’ll be able to earn a maximum of $150 cash back on gas at that 10% rate. The limit is unfortunate, but the reward rate is very good.

This isn’t the best full-time gas card because you can’t earn gas rewards year-round. But it can be quite rewarding for a few months, and has some other attractive features.

The Discover it Chrome (Review) usually offers:

  • 2% cash back at gas stations and restaurants, on up to $1,000 in combined purchases each quarter
  • 1% cash back everywhere else
  • Cashback Match: the rewards you earn in the first year will be doubled

This card has a great cash rewards bonus. So you’ll end up getting 4% cash back on gas and at restaurants, and 2% back everywhere else. While the original deal is not very rewarding, the offer to double the cash rewards makes this quite a valuable card during the first year of use. With the $1,000 limit per quarter, that means you can potentially earn a total of $160 cash back on gas in that first year.

There are some extra benefits with this card too, but they are mostly shopping and travel protections. The exception is that cardholders can also check one of their FICO 8 Credit Scores from their TransUnion credit report.

This card offers 4% cash back on gas and at restaurants, for no annual fee. That makes it one of the better options for earning rewards on those kinds of purchases. But this card is only great because of the signup bonus in the first year. After that, it becomes a pretty average cash rewards credit card.

People with limited or bad credit have a harder time being approved for regular credit cards. Secured credit cards offer a different option for such people. They require a refundable security deposit at the start to fund their credit limit.

Most secured credit cards usually come with an annual fee and don’t offer any rewards. But the Discover it® Secured (Review) is a bit of an outlier. It has:

  • No annual fee
  • 2% cash back at gas stations and restaurants, on the first $1,000 spent each quarter
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases
  • Cashback Match: get double the cash back you earn in the first year

Those are decent terms even for a reward card, so it’s a surprise to find them on the Discover it Secured. Since most secured cards don’t offer any cash back at all, it’s an incredible deal for Discover to double the rewards earned on a card like this. All that for no annual fee.

The Discover it Secured requires a security deposit of at least $200 to get started. And cardholders will have access to one of their FICO 8 Credit Scores for free, based on their TransUnion credit report. This is a feature that every secured card should have. It provides a way for cardholders to monitor their credit and get custom feedback to improve it.

This card should definitely be the first choice for anyone looking for a secured credit card. And it might be your only option if you want a secured card that offers rewards for gas.

Once again, Discover provides the best gas rewards credit card for students. Check out the Discover it® Chrome Card for College Students (Review). College students are typically new to credit, with limited or no credit history. This makes getting that first credit card tough. Student credit cards are designed with this in mind.

The Discover it Chrome for College Students has all the features of the regular Discover it Chrome. But is also has something extra designed specifically for students:

This is a great benefit for people who are just jumping into the world of credit and could use some guidance.

  • Must be a Costco member
  • 4% cash back on eligible gas (including at Costco)
  • 3% cash back at restaurants and on eligible travel
  • 2% cash back on other Costco and Costco.com purchases
  • 0% intro APR on purchases for 7 months, 15.49% *Variable after that
  • No annual fee

Costco members have a special advantage with the Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi (Review). This card has no annual fee but requires a Costco membership to apply, which is at least $60 annually.

If you’re already a Costco member this card can be very rewarding, offering:

  • 4% cash back at gas stations, including Costco, for the first $7,000 in purchases each year
  • 3% cash back on restaurant and eligible travel purchases
  • 2% cash back at Costco
  • 1% cash back everywhere else

So this card provides 4% cash back on gas throughout the entire year — quite a high rate compared to most cards. Most gas rewards credit cards don’t offer their bonus categories at wholesale clubs, like Costco. So this card is one of your only options for earning rewards for gas at Costco.

The 4% cash rewards rate will be limited to the first $7,000 spent each year. But that will provide a maximum of $280 cash back per year. That’s quite a bit higher than most cards.

The other bonus categories are pretty good as well. The 3% cash back for restaurants and travel is on the upper end compared to most cards. And the 2% back at Costco will be a welcome bonus for any member who shops there frequently.

This card also comes with some basic shopping and travel protections. Plus you’ll get a 0% intro APR for purchases for 7 months. It’s not too long, but it’s better than nothing. Intro APR periods like this provide a short window for cardholders to pay off purchases without accruing interest.

Best Gas Card for Sam’s Club Members

Fair Credit

  • Annual Fee: $0
  • Interest Rate: 14.90%-22.90% (Variable)
Quick Card Facts
  • 5% cash back for gas in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, including gas at Sam's Club; only on the first $6,000 per year, then 1%
  • 3% cash back for dining and travel expenses
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases
  • Get a $45 statement credit if you open your account online and make a $45 purchase at samsclub.com on the same day
  • Cap of $5,000 in cash back rewards per year

The Sam’s Club Mastercard is an obvious choice for anyone who is already a Sam’s Club member. This card is available to anyone with a Sam’s Club membership, the cheapest of which is $45 annually.

Members should definitely take advantage of this offer, because you’ll get:

  • 5% cash back on gas, on the first $6,000 spent per year
  • 3% cash back on dining and travel
  • 1% cash back everywhere else
  • Signup bonus: get a $45 statement credit when you open an account online and make a $45 purchase at samsclub.com with it the same day

The 5% back you’ll get on gas is a great rate, about as high as it usually ever gets for credit cards. The $6,000 limit means you’ll be able to earn up to $300 cash back per year on gas, though most people don’t spend that much on gas. But you’ll probably be able to earn enough to offset the cost of being a Sam’s Club member. Possibly even if you have the Plus membership at $100 per year. And that doesn’t even factor in the cash back rewards you’ll earn from the dining and travel category.

If you’re already paying for a Sam’s Club membership you might as well get some good rewards as well. Since this card can be completely free to use as long as you avoid interest and fees, it should be a welcome addition to your wallet.
