Is a retail store credit card right for you?

Here’s a basic rule that applies to all store credit cards: If you really like Store X, you might get value from the Store X Credit Card. But maybe not.

Check out our picks for the best store credit cards available today. We have our three best overall card picks, followed by the best store cards in a variety of categories. One or more of them could help you get rewards and benefits at your favorite retailers. But you should carefully consider the card terms, and check if you could get a better deal with a general cash back rewards credit card.

Is a Retail Store Credit Card Right For You?

Some merchants provide their own co-branded store credit cards to entice shoppers with discounts when checking out, or with offers to pay over time. These cards are instant approval, so you can use them immediately for that purchase. It can be tempting to save a few bucks on your purchase, but are these cards really worth it?

Retail store cards can sometimes be very rewarding, but in many cases you can get more value with a general-use rewards card.

Most store cards are limited in some ways, and you can often get better rewards and benefits with a more typical credit card. And store-branded credit cards typically have worse terms than the normal rewards cards you can get from big banks.

There are two basic types of store credit card, which are sometimes referred to as:

  • Open-loop cards: These cards can be used anywhere, and have the Visa or Mastercard logo in the bottom-right (sometimes American Express).
  • Closed-loop cards: These cards can only be used with the co-branded merchant, and sometimes with its affiliates. There is no Visa or Mastercard logo.

Open-loop cards are obviously more useful, because you can use them anywhere credit cards are accepted. But you might still find a closed-loop card useful if it has some feature that you value highly.

Store credit cards are pretty much like any other credit card, except for the open-loop and closed-loop distinction. You can usually apply for them either in-store or online. You don’t always need excellent credit — on the contrary, many store cards are designed for people with average credit scores.

The following pros and cons apply to store cards in general, because they tend to have some similar features. But they don’t necessarily apply to every store card.

Pros of Store Credit Cards

  • Easy to get for people with poor or average credit, making them a decent option for building or rebuilding credit
  • May provide the most value for shopping with the co-branded merchant, compared to other credit cards
  • May offer unique perks or financing options with that merchant
  • Open-loop cards can be used anywhere

Cons of Store Credit Cards

  • Low credit limits
  • High interest rates
  • Poor customer support in some cases, especially for cards issued by Synchrony Bank
  • Some have no rewards and offer very limited value
  • Deferred-interest financing offers can end up costing you money if you don’t follow the terms (they’re different from most 0% intro APR offers)
  • You usually can’t use them for balance transfers
  • Closed-loop cards are limited to that single store
  • The checkout lane is not a good place to make significant financial decisions that will affect your credit
If you’re going to shop at a particular store and you don’t have its co-branded card, you can still get good credit card rewards in a less direct way. Use a credit card at a different store to buy a gift card for that first store, earning rewards on the gift card purchase instead. Then you can use that gift card to shop at the first store. But watch out, because some cards have terms that prevent you from earning rewards on gift cards.

Selection Criteria: What Makes a Great Store Credit Card?

  • Fits your lifestyle: It should offer rewards and benefits with a merchant where you frequently shop.
  • Spending rewards: Your card should provide rewards every time you make a purchase, rather than just giving you a one-time discount.
  • A relatively good offer: Does it offer more cash back or points than you can get with a general-use rewards card?
  • Valuable extra benefits: The best store cards offer merchant-specific benefits that shoppers will find useful, like free clothing alterations.
  • Good customer support: Many store cards are known for having poor customer service, but some, like cards from the major issuers, are better than others.
  • Easy way to build credit: Since store cards generally have lower credit requirements, you can use them improve your credit if you can’t qualify for better cards.

A store card might be a good fit if you consistently spend a lot of money with a particular store — as long as the card offer is relatively good, of course.

When used responsibly, store cards will let you earn rewards, take advantage of benefits, and build your credit at the same time.

The 3 Best Retail Store Credit Cards

We recommend the following three credit cards because, out of all the store cards on the market today, they’ll provide the most value for the most people. They’re quite versatile, useful for shopping online and at physical locations all over the U.S.

Amazon, Target, and Costco cover a very wide range of products. Most people can do their everyday shopping at one of these stores, or a combination of them. And if you need to shop elsewhere you can use a general rewards card, or look into a different store card for a particular type of spending.

Before applying for a store credit card, check out our picks for the best credit cards in a variety of different categories.
