Is a No Foreign Transaction Fee Credit Card Right For You?

Do you regularly find yourself traveling outside the United States? Are you planning to make any purchases in a foreign currency?

If you answered yes to either of these questions, a credit card with no foreign transaction fees would probably be useful to you.

Most credit cards will charge a fee on foreign transactions, often up to 3%. If you were to make $5,000 in purchases in foreign currency per year, for example, that would be an extra $150 you’d end up paying.

This is a cost that you should do your best to avoid — and luckily, that’s pretty easy to do.

Many cards don’t have foreign transaction fees. You’ll often find this feature on travel rewards credit cards, but there are quite a few others that share it as well. And many of these cards don’t have annual fees either, which means you don’t need to pay a cent for foreign transactions.

There are four credit card issuers that don’t include foreign transaction fees on any of their cards. These issuers are:

No matter your level of credit, whether it’s bad or excellent, there’s a no foreign transaction fee card designed with you in mind.

It’s worth the effort to find a card that won’t charge you extra if you expect to spend any significant amount of money outside the U.S., or in a foreign currency. Even if you’ll only spend a bit like that each year, it would be useful to have a go-to card for those purchases.

Selection Criteria: What Makes a Great No Foreign Transaction Fee Card?

Besides having no foreign transaction fee, of course, here are some features to look for.

  • Fits your needs: Maybe you just need a card for spending outside the U.S., which is fine. Or perhaps you want a card to use for your everyday shopping as well.
  • A useful rewards program: It’s great to earn a bit of cash back or some points for the types of purchases you make the most.
  • Shopping and travel benefits: The best credit cards have luxurious travel perks, but most cards still come with some kind of cost-saving protections.
  • A reasonable annual fee: The card you want might have an annual fee. Make sure the rewards and benefits are valuable enough to make that fee worth it.
  • Good customer support: You hope to never use it, but a solid customer support team behind your card can save you from a headache or two. That’s especially true if you’re traveling outside the U.S. and run into some issues using your card.
