The American Express Bluebird debit card offers a nice set of basic benefits from Amex, which typically you’d only find on a credit card. You’ll get Amex Offers, Purchase Protection, Fraud Protection, Roadside Assistance Hotline, and a couple others.

Some debit cards are pretty bad when it comes to excessive fees, but this card does pretty well. You won’t have to pay a:

  • Foreign transaction fee
  • Monthly/annual fee
  • Fee per purchase
  • ATM fee for in-network withdrawals (MoneyPass ATMs)
  • Customer service fee
  • Inactivity fee
  • Setup fee when you sign up online
  • Standard shipping card replacement
  • Direct deposit fee
  • Fee to reload from debit cards

But you will have to pay a:

  • Fee when getting a Bluebird card at a retail location, up to $5
  • Cash reload fee at participating retailers other than Walmart, up to $3.95
  • ATM withdrawal fee for out-of-network withdrawals, $2.50

MoneyPass ATMs are practically everywhere now, and there’s a good chance you’ll find a Walmart nearby, so you can see how this card could potentially be completely free to use.

You can also pay a fee to access your money in minutes when you use the Bluebird app to take a mobile capture of your check, or wait 10 days and you can access it for free.
