Which Amex Corporate Card Is Best for You (And Your Company)?

8 min read
Ellen Sirull By Ellen Sirull Feb 29, 2020 | Updated Mar 27, 2020

Entrepreneurs, small business owners, and big companies have many options when it comes to credit cards. For large corporations in particular, American Express has six different corporate charge cards with their own offerings, benefits, and fees, and one may be a fit for your business.

American Express corporate cards are charge cards, which are different than regular credit cards. While you won’t pay interest, you do have to pay off the balance in full every month.

Amex corporate cards are created for U.S.-based companies with gross annual revenues over $4 million. Rather than relying on your personal credit, card approval is based on the creditworthiness of your corporation.

After your company is approved for a corporate card account, copies of that card can be dispersed to executives and other employees. A central finance or human resources department usually oversees the process of authorizing and issuing new cards to managers and employees. Depending on the terms you work out with Amex, employees may or may not be liable for certain charges.

Amex Corporate Card Benefits

Membership Rewards

The corporate Platinum, Gold, and Green cards offer two Membership Rewards programs — personal and corporate. Each employee card must be enrolled individually, and any program fees will apply per card ($90 for Gold and Green accounts).

Here’s a breakdown of the differences between the two:

Personal Membership Rewards Program Corporate Membership Rewards Program
Main Purpose Reward employees by letting them earn and redeem points individually Combine points earned from multiple business cards to leverage for your business
Who Uses Points Individual employees Your company’s Amex program administrator
Earning Points 1X point per dollar 1X point per dollar
Redeeming Points Redeem for gift cards, merchandise, air travel, hotel stays, and more Redeem for office supplies, technology products, business services, statement credits, or gift cards to reward employees or thank clients
Other Options Transfer points to various frequent traveler programs or link to other personal Membership Rewards accounts

You don’t have to choose just one program or the other. Your company can maintain both at once, but any individual corporate Amex card can only be enrolled in one program at a time.

Expense Management and Reporting

Amex helps businesses with management and expenses through its American Express at Work platform. Some of the features it offers your business include:

  • Track and Manage Your Company’s Spending: Monitor cardmember activity, track balances and recent changes, and request credit balance refunds.
  • Minimize Delinquencies: Send payment reminders, make payments online, identify delinquent accounts, and monitor delinquency levels.
  • Help Reduce the Risk of Fraud: Track large transactions, review purchase histories, identify high-risk purchases, and suspend or cancel accounts immediately if needed.
  • Cardmember Support: Your cardholders also have access to track their spending, dispute charges, and schedule payments.

Mobile Apps

American Express offers a few different apps for your business and employees:

  • American Express Business App: This helps you manage your Amex corporate card expenses by adding receipt images with notes, and itemize expenses by keeping your receipts, notes, and transaction details in one place. You can download it in the App Store or get it on Google Play.
  • American Express App: This app allows your cardmembers to access and manage their corporate card accounts, see transactions, get fraud alerts, and make payments. Cardmembers can download it in the App Store or get it on Google Play.
  • American Express Maps: Get tips for places to eat, stay, and shop based on other Amex cardmember recommendations when you’re traveling somewhere new. This is available when you’re logged in to your Amex corporate card account on your mobile phone.
  • TripCase: If you download the TripCase app and sync it with your Amex account, you get some added travel features such as alerts on flight delays, details on airport lounges nearby, and a master itinerary that consolidates all of your travel bookings on your Amex card. Download it in the App Store or get it on Google Play.
  • Digital Wallets: Amex corporate cardholders can also use Google Pay, Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, or Fitbit Pay as long as your company authorizes it.

Service and Support

American Express is touted by its cardholders for excellent service, ranking just behind Discover in customer satisfaction among national credit card issuers according to J.D. Power. Amex corporate customer service includes 24/7 phone support for cardmembers and a dedicated support line for your program administrator.

Insider tip

If you have a startup, Amex also has a special program that is currently by invitation only. Its Corporate Program for Startups helps you get many of the perks that American Express provides its corporate cardholders. You can learn more on the Amex website or by calling 1-855-747-5579 to speak with a representative.

The Bottom Line on American Express Corporate Cards

Amex offers corporate card options for large businesses to take advantage of benefits and manage spending, with excellent service, support, and mobile app account tracking.

Again, these are charge cards which need to be paid off each month, so if you’re looking for the ability to pay off purchases over time a corporate credit card with financing options or a typical business credit card may be a better fit. (Though we always recommend you pay off every credit card each month, unless you have a 0% rate.)
