Chase Freedom Unlimited Basics

1. No Annual Fee

When you consider the host of perks the Chase Freedom Unlimited offers, it’s hard to believe you never have to pay an annual fee. It’s just one of many reasons why the card provides a great entry point for consumers looking to get started with credit card rewards.

2. 0% APR Introductory Offer for 15 months

Chase Freedom Unlimited cardholders receive an introductory purchase APR, 0% for 15 months.

The promotional period is longer than most cards, which can be beneficial if you plan on spreading out payments on a large purchase.

You’ll want to pay off the entire balance before the introductory period expires. That’s when the APR converts to the regular 14.99% - 24.74% Variable rate, and any balance you carry from month to month will accrue interest.

Cash Back Rewards and Benefits

3. Generous Welcome Offer

The Chase Freedom Unlimited welcomes new cardholders with a nice incentive: $200 bonus for spending $500 in the first 3 months. That’s a tidy bounty for a card with no annual fee.

4. Earn Unlimited Cash Back Rewards

When you use the Chase Freedom Unlimited, you’ll earn 5% cash back on travel purchases you make through Ultimate Rewards and 3% cash back on dining and drugstore spending.

While these rewards are valuable, the card separates itself from the competition with its unlimited 1.5% cash back rate for all other purchases. That’s 50% higher than the 1% cash back most cards provide for non-bonus category purchases.

There is no limit to the amount of cash back you can earn, and cash back rewards do not expire as long as your account remains open.

5. Complimentary DoorDash DashPass

The Chase Freedom Unlimited also receives three months of free delivery from DashPass, which is a subscription offered by restaurant delivery giant DoorDash. You don’t have to pay delivery fees on orders you make over $12, and any service fees you incur will be at a reduced rate. Once the three-month period expires, you’ll be automatically re-enrolled at 50% off for the next nine months unless you cancel.

Remember, though, the DashPass only works with restaurants that participate in DashPass.

Activating your DashPass subscription is easy; just add your Chase Freedom Unlimited (or other eligible Chase card) as your default payment option in your DashPass account.

Redeem Points and Maximize Rewards

6. Redeem Points Through Chase Ultimate Rewards for 50%+ Higher Point Value

While the Chase Freedom Unlimited brands itself as a cash back credit card, you technically earn points, which you can redeem in various ways. The simplest way to redeem the cash back you earn is as a direct deposit into your checking or savings account to use as you please.

You can also opt to redeem rewards as a statement credit for the full value towards your account balance.

The redemption value with the Freedom Unlimited card is 1 cent per point. But you can boost the value of your points by transferring them to a premium Chase card with more valuable ways to redeem Ultimate Rewards points.

For example, when you transfer your rewards to the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Ink Business Preferred cards, your points are worth 1.25 cents each for eligible travel redemptions. That’s 25% more than the value you would receive by redeeming the points for cash back. The Sapphire Reserve steps it up another notch with 1.5 cents per point — a 50% increase — when you redeem for travel purchases using the Ultimate Rewards portal.

These premium cards allow you to transfer points to various airline and hotel loyalty programs. In many cases, these programs can provide the best value for rewards points (2 cents per point or more, depending on the deal).

Other Chase Freedom Unlimited Benefits

7. Purchase Protection

The Freedom Unlimited comes with 120 days of protection against damage or theft for eligible purchases, up to $500 per claim and $50,000 per account.

Insider tip

To receive the purchase protection benefit, you must alert the Benefit Administrator within 90 days of the damage or theft. The Benefit Administrator will then send you a claim form, which you must complete and submit within 120 days of the incident. You can also file your claim online at www.eclaimsline.com. For this benefit and all that follow, be sure to refer to your Chase Freedom Unlimited Guide to Benefits as terms and conditions apply.

8. Extended Warranty Protection

The Chase Freedom Unlimited card offers extended warranty protection that adds an additional year to eligible manufacturer’s warranties of three years or less. The protection covers up to $10,000 per claim with a $50,000 per account maximum.

9 Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance

Sometimes unforeseen events prevent you from embarking on a trip or continuing with your travel plans as expected. In these instances, you may be able to take advantage of the Freedom Unlimited’s trip cancellation and interruption insurance, which reimburses you up to $1,500 per passenger and $6,000 per trip for prepaid passenger fares.

Of course, the insurance doesn’t cover every situation, but it does cover many instances when events outside your control impact your travel plans, such as severe weather or sickness.

10. Travel and Emergency Assistance

The Chase Freedom Unlimited can assist you with emergency services while you are traveling. When you call the toll-free number, 1-888-320-9656, you can make use of several services, such as:

  • Urgent message delivery to family members, business associates, or other travelers
  • Emergency ticket replacement
  • Assistance locating lost luggage
  • Prescription assistance
  • Emergency transportation service

11. Secondary Auto Insurance

Freedom Unlimited cardholders can take advantage of the card’s secondary auto insurance by declining the rental company’s collision insurance and charging the cost of the rental car to the card. This insurance covers theft and collision for most cars, but doesn’t include moving trucks or other trucks.

As secondary insurance, the coverage pays for any damages not covered by your personal insurance provider.

FAQ

What’s the difference between the Chase Freedom Flex and Chase Freedom Unlimited?

The Chase Freedom Flex℠ (Review) and Chase Freedom Unlimited® (Review) offer generous welcome bonuses and cash back on dining and drugstore purchases. However, the two cards differ in the way they structure their cash back rewards. The Freedom Flex offers 5% cash back in spending categories that rotate every quarter, while the Freedom Unlimited provides 1.5% cash back on all non-bonus category spending.

Is the Chase Freedom Unlimited a good travel card?

Yes, and here’s why: The Freedom Unlimited’s rewards program offers 5% back on travel through Chase Ultimate Rewards, 3% cash back on dining and drugstore purchases, and 1.5% cash back on everything else — all with no annual fee.

What’s more, the rewards you earn can be used as Ultimate Rewards points. That means if you have certain other Chase credit cards in the Ultimate Rewards family, your cash back can become much more valuable.

While the rewards are worthwhile, they would be better if the card didn’t require you to book travel arrangements through Chase Ultimate Rewards to earn 5%. By contrast, many travel credit cards offer rewards without imposing similar booking restrictions.

What credit scores do you need to get the Chase Freedom Unlimited card?

To qualify for the Chase Freedom Unlimited card, applicants typically need good credit scores or better. That means you should have scores of at least 670 for FICO and 700 for VantageScore. Credit scores alone won’t guarantee your approval, however, as credit card issuers consider multiple factors, including your income, existing debts, and credit history.

Does the Chase Freedom Unlimited have a foreign transaction fee?

While the Chase Freedom Unlimited card comes with no annual fee, there is a fee for all foreign transactions (3% of each transaction in U.S. dollars). However, some Chase cards, such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (Review) and Chase Sapphire Reserve® (Review), don’t charge you for foreign transaction fees.
