Best Business Credit Cards for Travel

By Brendan Harkness

Our Selection Criteria

  • Designed for businesses: Although you can use any credit card for business spending, we chose business-specific credit cards that provide rewards and benefits geared toward the needs of small to medium-sized businesses.
  • Travel perks: The best travel cards have cost-saving benefits like airport lounge access, Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credits, hotel/airline fee credits, and elite hotel status.
  • Rewards for typical business spending: Flights, hotels, car rentals, internet/phone services, shipping, office supplies — you’ll find cards with bonus categories covering all these business expenses, and more.
  • Point/mile transfers: With a million different travel providers and services to choose from, frequent travelers need points or miles that can be transferred to their favorite airlines and hotels.
  • Introductory bonus: A big signup bonus can provide a wealth of points or miles right off the bat, often enough for a free flight or hotel stay (but more like icing on the cake than meat and potatoes).
  • Travel protections: You hope to never need them, but protection benefits like auto rental collision damage waivers, trip delay insurance, and travel accident insurance are great to have if things go south.
  • No foreign transaction fee: Our favorite travel cards won’t charge extra for making purchases in foreign currency.
Is a Business Travel Credit Card Right for You?
Best Business Credit Cards for Travel

By Brendan Harkness

Is a Business Travel Credit Card Right for You?

Two simple questions:

  1. Do you own or manage a business?
  2. Do you travel regularly for business?

If the answer is “yes” to both, you might benefit from a business credit card for travel. Business cards have special features to make them more useful than your average credit card when it comes to company spending and financial management. And business cards for travel are designed to meet the needs of small business owners and employees who primarily book airlines, hotels, and car rentals.

Other than those considerations, you should conduct the same due diligence you’d normally do when applying for any credit card. Take a look at the rewards, benefits, and terms; would the card fit easily into your lifestyle? Do you spend a lot in the bonus categories? Could you make good use of the benefits? Do you understand how to pay off the card responsibly?

If you’re not sure what it takes to be approved, read up on how to qualify for business credit cards (it might be easier than you think).

Most airline cards are heavy on the perks, and light on the miles. The United Club℠ Business Card is no exception, with a strong suite of benefits and only decent spending rewards.

You’ll get just 2X miles per dollar from the card at United, in addition to your normal United miles. But you’ll also get access to United Club lounges, and affiliated Star Alliance lounges, which would typically cost up to $650 per year (in August 2020). Premier Access travel services grant you priority check-in, security screening, and boarding, easing tensions at the airport. And free first and second checked bags for you and a companion could save hundreds of dollars per year.

Business trips can be a pain, but the right credit card can provide some relief. The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card (Review) could be your ticket to a more relaxing hotel stay.

Every dollar you spend with Hilton will earn a generous heap of points, and you’ll likely earn enough for some free night stays in no time. The other bonus categories are nothing to sneeze at either.

You’ll get complimentary Hilton Honors Gold status (which normally requires 40 nights or 75,000 points), so you can show off with room upgrades and enjoy free continental breakfasts to get you going. Your 10 free Priority Pass lounge visits will bring some peace of mind at the airport.

Spend $15,000 in a calendar year with this card to earn a free weekend night stay, which could completely offset the annual fee. That shouldn’t be too hard for most businesses. Spend more ($60,000) to earn a second free night; again, something easily attainable by many businesses.

Spending Rewards
  • 30X points per dollar at Hilton properties
    • 12X Base points per dollar from the card
    • 18X Base points per dollar for Hilton Honors Gold status
  • 6X Bonus points per dollar:
    • Flights booked directly with airlines or with AmexTravel.com
    • U.S. gas stations

Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card

(Rates & Fees)
Annual Fee $125
Regular APR 15.74% - 24.74% Variable

Marriott Bonvoy devotees only have one option for a co-branded business card, but that’s not a problem because the Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card (Review) has a lot to offer.

For the main course, you’ll get premium internet and a free night award every year starting after your account anniversary. That could completely offset the annual fee, leaving you with a card that could essentially be free to use (as long as you avoid interest and other fees). A second free night can be had by making $60,000 in purchases in a calendar year, and if your business is already spending at that level this is an easy grab.

One downside is that you’ll only get Silver Elite status with Marriott, which isn’t terribly impressive but comes with priority late checkout so you don’t have to rush in the morning. But, for that same $60K in spending mentioned above you’ll get Gold Elite status, and can take advantage of room upgrades and a bigger point bonus.

Spending Rewards
  • 17X points per dollar at Marriott Bonvoy properties
    • 6X Bonus points per dollar from the card
    • 11X Base points per dollar for Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status
  • 4X Bonus points per dollar at:
    • U.S. restaurants
    • U.S. gas stations
    • Wireless telephone services purchased directly from U.S. providers
    • U.S. purchases of shipping
  • 2X Bonus points for all other purchases
Introductory Bonus Offer
  • 100,000 bonus points for spending $5,000 in the first 3 months; $150 in statement credits for eligible U.S. advertising in select media; complimentary Platinum Elite status for one year (2/1/21–1/31/22)
  • Free Night Award: Every year after your account anniversary you’ll get a Free Night Award, good for redemption values of 35,000 points or fewer; earn a second free night by spending $60,000 in a calendar year.
  • Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status: Includes a 10% bonus on Base points and priority late checkout
  • Earn Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status: Spend $35,000 in a calendar year to gain a Gold Elite membership.

  • $100 property credit: Earn up to $100 in property credits when booking at least two nights direct with a special rate code at The Ritz-Carlton or St. Regis.
