Annual Fee $95
Regular APR 17.49% - 24.49% Variable

It’s hard to go wrong with the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (Review) if you travel at least a few times per year, booking airfare or hotels as you go.

You’ll earn a competitive point rate on travel purchases and dining, with a great introductory bonus: 60,000 points for spending $4,000 in the first three months.

Those points would be worth $750 for travel expenses through Chase Ultimate Rewards, at 1.25 cents per point, for an 18.75% return on your spending. That’s pretty good for any travel credit card, but you could do even better with a point transfer to a partner airline or hotel loyalty program.

That might give you 2 cents per point or more, if you find a good deal. And with that you’d be earning a top-tier 30% return or better.

Spending Rewards
  • 5X Ultimate Rewards points per dollar on Lyft rides (through March 2020)
  • 2X Ultimate Rewards points per dollar on:
    • Travel
    • Dining
  • 1X Ultimate Rewards point per dollar on all other purchases
Introductory Bonus Offer

    • Value: $600–$1,200 (1–2 cents per point)
    • Return on spend: 15%–30%

If you’re a frequent traveler and you’re ready for a premium card to speed you along your way, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® (Review) has a lot to offer.

Along with a solid introductory bonus (pretty standard for high-end travel cards) you’ll also get a versatile $300 credit that can be applied to all sorts of expenses. That’s a better deal than the credit you get with The Platinum Card® from American Express, which is only good for incidental fees at a single airline.

And that’s not all — you get airport lounge access with a Priority Pass Select membership, and a fee credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck. The Reserve also has primary auto rental insurance, a pretty rare feature, so your regular insurance won’t be involved in a rental car accident.

Paying tons of interest on a credit card balance? The Citi® Diamond Preferred® Card (Review) might be able to help.

You’ll get 21 months at 0% APR, giving you a long time to pay off any high-interest credit cards or debts. There’s not much else to it, but this extra-long period makes the Simplicity one of the best balance transfer credit cards on the market.

Purchases will get a shorter period, only 12 months, so the main focus here is balance transfers. After the intro periods are up, you’ll get a regular rate of 15.24%–25.24% Variable for purchases and balance transfers.

Balance transfers can be a great way to pay off debt for less cost overall, but they typically come with a transfer fee of 3%–5%.

A few cards, however, like the BankAmericard® Credit Card, offer balance transfers with 0% interest rates for no fee, giving you a potentially free way to pay down balances with high rates.

Just be sure to make at least your minimum payment each month, and aim to pay off the balance in full by the time the 0% period ends. Any remaining balance will be subject to the regular APR.

With no annual fee, any first-year rewards you earn can be all profit (as long as you avoid interest and fees). And it’s hard to find better first-year rewards than what you get with the Discover it® Cash Back (Review).

This card is famous for its 5% cash back rewards (up to $1,500 spent per quarter). They change every three months, and often include popular categories like gas, groceries, and online purchases. 5% back is quite good, and that on its own would make this cash back card a major contender.

But Discover’s unique Cashback Match will double all the rewards you earn in the first year — that gives you a 10% cash back equivalent in the bonus categories (practically unheard of) and 2% back for all other purchases (a top-notch rate).

The Cashback Match is in lieu of a typical signup bonus, but it can be even more valuable if you max out the 5% categories each quarter. That’d give you $600 cash back in that first year (10% of $6,000), plus anything else you earn from non-bonus-category spending.

Spending Rewards
  • 5% cash back in categories that rotate every three months (see calendar below), up to $1,500 spent per quarter
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases
Introductory Bonus Offer
  • Cashback Match: New cardmembers get double cash back in the first year (awarded after the first year)

Naming this the best card for bad credit is a no-brainer. Where many cards designed for poor credit come with extra fees and no rewards, the Discover it® Secured (Review) seems more like your average cash back card.

You’ll get some decent 2% bonus categories, and like all Discover cards, you’ll get double rewards in your first year. Most secured cards with rewards only offer 1% back at most — but here you can earn as much as 4% back! There’s even a balance transfer offer (it’s not a 0% APR offer, but if you have bad credit it could be useful).

This is a secured card so you’ll need to provide a deposit when you’re approved. The minimum deposit is $200, and the max is $2,500. Your credit line will be equal to your deposit.

And some icing on the cake: Discover will check your account and overall credit every eight months. If you’ve been using credit responsibly, Discover may return your security deposit and allow you to continue using the card.

Hotel credit cards tend to be exceptionally rewarding, though you need to use the rewards and benefits with the co-branded hotel brand. That means you should look to your favorite hotel first to see what’s on offer.

Still, some cards are better than others, and the Hilton Honors Aspire Card is no doubt a keeper. With $600 in annual hotel/airline credits plus a free weekend night (which could be worth $400 or more on its own at high-end properties), anyone who stays with Hilton regularly should be well aware of what premium cards like this can do.

That’s not to mention the complimentary Priority Pass Select membership, and the whole mess of bonus points you can earn. With hotel cards like these, any points you earn with the card are in addition to the normal points you’d earn as a member, and that can make for some very rewarding stays.

Hoping to snag a sweet flight deal? Airline credit cards might be the answer, although they tend to lack the long-term value of some other types of cards.

Most signup bonuses require some amount of spending to earn a certain number of miles — but the AAdvantage® Aviator™ Red World Elite Mastercard® makes it perfectly easy to claim a very lucrative offer.

Cardholders earn 60,000 bonus miles simply for paying the annual fee and making a purchase in the first 90 days. That’s a great deal, but it’s not all: You’ll also get an American Airlines Companion Certificate, which is good for one guest at $99 plus taxes and fees.

All that just for paying the annual fee and making a purchase? The Aviator Red tends to fly under the radar, not usually mentioned among the most valuable cards, but this excellent bonus makes it hard to beat for AA passengers.

Business owners are lucky. They’ve got a great opportunity to earn a wealth of bonus points with the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card (Review), currently offering one of the biggest introductory bonuses available on any credit card.

For spending $5,000 in the first three months you’ll earn 80,000 bonus points, an outstanding value. Those points would be worth $1,000 when redeemed for travel through Chase Ultimate Rewards, or you could get even more through a point transfer to an airline or hotel. If you transferred and then got 2 cents per point, for example, you’d be getting $1,600 worth. Wow!

Small business credit cards tend to have better-than-average signup bonuses — you’ll find some other good picks in the runners up — but the Ink Business Preferred is preferred for a reason.

The Best Credit Card Deals

As we’ve said before, credit cards come in many shapes and sizes. And that means credit card deals come in many shapes and sizes, too.

The most rewarding credit card offers are usually focused on:

You’ll often get one (or both) of these offers when you get a new card. We’ll go over each of them here.

Introductory Bonus Offers

The intro bonus offer (aka signup bonus or welcome bonus offer) is probably the most lucrative credit card feature.

For a certain amount of spending in the first few months you can earn a ton of card rewards, or gain access to valuable benefits. Or, depending on the terms, earning your bonus may be as easy as making a single purchase with the card.

Signup bonuses are pretty simple, and usually look something like this:

  • $150 cash back for spending $1,000 in the first 3 months

In some cases you may find a certain perk being offered, instead of or along with card rewards. You might see something like this on airline cards, for example:

  • 60,000 bonus points and a companion fare for spending $2,000 in the first 3 months

Discover credit cards are different, coming with a unique first-year bonus offer: the Cashback Match. Discover will match all the cash back you earn in your first year, and that could end up being quite a lot. With the Discover it® Cash Back, for example, you can earn a 10% cash back equivalent on certain purchases in that first year — an exceptional offer.

There are public signup offers, which anyone can see, and there are also private signup offers, which are usually bigger and only available for some applicants. If you go to apply and see a signup bonus that’s a bit bigger than you saw advertised somewhere else, you’re probably seeing a private offer. Nice!

0% APR Balance Transfer Offers

A balance transfer is when you move a balance from one account to another — usually from one credit card to another.

The best balance transfers offers give you 0% APR for a certain number of months. The longer, the better. These usually look something like:

  • 0% APR on balance transfers for 12 months, for transfers made in the first 60 days
  • $5 or 5% balance transfer fee, whichever is greater

If you transfer a balance away from a high-interest card to a low-interest card (preferably 0%) and continue paying it off, you’ll pay less in interest charges overall. Just be sure to make your transfers within the time frame given in the terms.

And take note of the fee — you’ll have to figure that into your calculations to make sure you’re actually saving money. Luckily, there are a handful of balance transfer credit cards with no balance transfer fees, and their intro periods are definitely long enough to put a big dent in your debt.

Balance transfers are an easy way to save some cash. You can consolidate several balances onto a single 0% card, and you’ll have fewer payments to deal with along with a lower rate. You may even get additional promotional balance transfer offers later on, for 0% or other low rates.
